Disney to scrap direct-to-DVD sequels

Apologies if this has already been posted...

---------------------------------------------------------------------------
In a major strategy shift, the Walt Disney Co. said it will stop making lucrative direct-to-DVD sequels of such classic animated films as Cinderella, a move that reflects the growing influence of former Pixar Animation executives John Lasseter and Steve Jobs, who once called the films "embarrassing."

The change comes with a shake-up at the company's DisneyToon Studios, including the removal of longtime president Sharon Morrill, who will continue with the company in another capacity, Disney said Friday.

DisneyToon Studios will become part of Walt Disney Feature Animation and report directly to Animation President Ed Catmull and Lasseter, who assumed roles there after Disney bought Pixar Animation Studio last year for $US7.4 billion ($A8.75b) in stock.

That deal made Jobs, the former Pixar CEO who also runs Apple Inc., into Disney's largest shareholder and got him a spot on Disney's board.

DisneyToon will now only produce original DVD films, including the upcoming film starring the fairy Tinkerbell. Little Mermaid III, currently in production, will be the last DVD sequel released.

Disney has been a leader in the direct-to-DVD category, selling millions of copies of such films as Lion King 1 1/2 and Bambi II.

Although those DVDs were moneymakers for the studio, Disney purists scoffed, including Lasseter and Jobs.

In a 2003 conference call with financial analysts, Jobs said how much he hated the DVD sequels.

"We feel sick about Disney doing sequels," Jobs said. "If you look at the quality of their sequels ... it's pretty embarrassing."

When Disney bought Pixar, it put former Pixar president Catmull and Lasseter in charge of its own animation efforts. Lasseter has made no secret of his disdain for sequels in general, although he is working on Toy Story 3, scheduled to hit theatres in 2010.

Does this mean we're going to start seeing some cel animated theatrical features again?

Amazing that they got this canceled, they are crappy (Just saw Brother Bear II the other day, horrible) but it hard to believe the executives are willing to give up all this money.

"DisneyToon", any animators in the US? I thought most of these sequels were done either in Asia or Australia.

Yes, because Lasster has brought or will bring back the 2D cel animation division that had been dismantled and then farmed out to Korea & Mexico (responsible for shows like Fillmore!, Kim Possible, Lilo & Stitch: The Series, Brandy & Mr. Wiskers, Dave The Barbarian, etc.) So yeah, it's coming back.

John Lasseter called the new Tinkerbell movie "unwatchable."

“If anything, it’s way too complex for younger kids,” said another person familiar with the earlier version of the film. “They had books of rules for everything—rules for Neverland, rules for the Fairies, rules for the kids, rules for London. The whole thing was so complex, they [the animators] couldn’t keep track of it. I don’t know how they expected kids to.”

“I won't even begin to get into the fairy fart jokes or the strong lesbian tones of the original story.”

“The cost on this [Tinker Bell] will probably equal that of any of their recent theatrical animated films.”

Anybody have any recent sales figures for the Direct to DVD Sequels recently?
I find it hard to believe that The Mouse would let Lasseter cancel the DVD sequels if they were still making any kind of serious profit.
But the end of this particular form of atrocity is to be welcomed.

Somebody with power, influence, and money is making a decision based on good taste and integrity over the forces of profit.

And there was silence in Heaven for the space of half an hour.

Just reassuring to know it can happen.

Out of curiosity, anyone here seen any of these? Were they any good, or were they as bad as expected?
I have, they are mostly crap.

Pocahontas II is pretty bad, but actually a bit gutsy in the way it ends.

Cinderella II is a complete disaster, actually I think it's not just one movie but a bunch of mini movies that are horrible.

Hunchback bad, Mermaid bad, Mulan II BAAAAAAAAAD (Boring story about the Emperor sending his daughters to marry some people they don't know).

I think Lion King 1 1/2 is sort of OK, but to be honest I don't remember much of it.

Like I said before, I saw Brother Bear II the other day and that was pretty bad.

Yeah, I watch these, I have kids ...

BTW Stich! The Movie is not a direct DVD release.

The Lilo & Stitch stuff were really just extensions of the TV show. My son likes them, and I get a chuckle out of it now and then, but they're nothing compared to the original movie. Kevin McDonald's voice-over work is the best thing on the show.

There was one episode that pulled off a complete Kids in the Hall reunion, so that was pretty cool.

I'll go ahead and say Simba's Pride should have been theatrical.

Of the few I've seen, the second Aladdin sequel and the Emperor's New Groove sequel were decent.

And sadly, it won't bring back the TV shows that were cancelled, as I said before.

A couple of these (example: Lilo & Stitch 2: Stitch Has a Glitch, but not Stitch: The Movie) have theatrical level animation so they have that going for them. Others look about on par with the TV shows. The stories are nothing to get excited over, and in some cases are utterly terrible. I can see that Ariel might have had other adventures under the sea (as precedented in the tv series), but does Cinderella (a few-page-long Bros. Grimm faerie tale) need 2 sequels? Hell no. The Disney original (even though it is a classic masterpiece of animation) had a ton of padding to extend the simple story to feature length. I don't give a shit what happens to the step-sisters after "Happily Ever After". Unless it involves having their eyes pecked out by crows, like in the original story.

It seemed like it was some kind of family reunion for Kevin McDonald's character. I don't remember it that well because I don't actually watch the show. By staggering coincidence, that's the one episode I happened to tune in for, and I spent the entire time going "Hey, that's Scott Thompson! Was that Dave Foley?"
