Interpol - Our Love to Admire

Fucked up and posted this elsewhere but...

It's pretty good and pretty much entirely what you've come to expect from the band that apes Joy Division best.

They've opened up their sound a little bit and filled it with some wider atmospheric decisions. It adds some soul and a genuine, haunting feeling but cuts out some of the tighter, icy pop chops and right-of-the-bat hits in favor of a general mood that I'm still not sure of...but it's probably just sadness.

As a strong supporter, I have to admit a certain listless uncertainty that slowly comes across. It sounds like they wanted to reach heights safely, which is understandable but totally lacking balls or vision. They could be headed into a creative hole if they don't find a new way to approach their themes and use the talent, because they've got it.

Fans shouldn't be disappointed and will find the room for some new favorites, but I wouldn't call it their crossover. Even still, it's more than listenable, occasionally fascinating and affecting, and completely lacking a disaster or a masterpiece.

Strong cuts:

"Pioneer to the Falls"
"No I in Threesome"
"All Fired Up"
"Wrecking Ball"

It's a great album so far, after 6-7 listening sessions. FAvorites so far are The Scale, Pioneer and Rest My Chemistry.

I may end up liking it more than Antics, but Turn on the Bright Lights is still way ahead.

I'll second it being better than Antics.

Turn on the Bright Lights is the definitive "dark pop" album of at least the past ten years.
