Yeah, it's pretty bad. Here's a few thoughts.
There's no characters, the people in the movie are just walking cliches. There's the gruff black security guard, the crazy old hobo who knows what's going on, but who only talks cryptic nonsense, the hot nurse, the annoying yuppie who whines about everything and the hunky single dad who only cares about his daughter.
The sets look good, but they never feel like a real place. You always have the feeling that if the camera panned a bit to the side you would see behind the fake wall.
The dialogue is terrible.
The story makes no sense and nothing is explained. The ending is especially baffling.
Here's the entire movie:
The people talk about what's happening and wander around the hospital until one of the Lordi monsters pops up and they run away. Then they return to wandering and talking about what's happening. Repeat this about six times and you've got the entirety of Dark Floors.
The film feels even more like a video game than the Silent Hill movie did. I'm also sure that the Silent Hill games were a big inspiration.
There's not a bit of the fun that the Lordi music videos have. Their videos are influenced by the 80s horror films, but this film is more influenced by all the recent Asian horror films.
Finally what destroys the film is the lack of any kind of atmosphere. Sure, there's plenty of The Shining style shots of empty hallways and doors and whatnot, but the director Riski is no Kubrick. There's not a single scary moment.
The practical and visual effects they've pulled of are really impressive and the film looks great.
So, if you want to look forward to a Finnish horror film that might not suck forget Dark Floors and focus on
Sauna. Hopefully it will be better.
