If you were hoping to see more of Old Spock’s adventures in setting up a New Vulcan in Star Trek 2, I have bad news: he won’t be in the film. That’s because Leonard Nimoy has opted to retire from acting once he’s all done with his current story arc on the TV show Fringe.

Talking to the Toronto Sun, the 79 year old actor said “I want to get off the stage. Also, I don’t think it would be fair to Zachary Quinto… He’s a terrific actor, he looks the part, and it’s time to give him some space. And I’m very flattered the character will continue.

Nimoy wasn’t just Spock. He starred in Mission: Impossible, released five albums (yikes), changed my life forever by narrating In Search Of… and in the last few years discovered a proclivity for photographing fat broads. But to many of us Nimoy will always, in some way, be Spock, and Spock will always be Nimoy./

Nimoy has retired before, so we’ll see if this one sticks. I hate to be the big Trekkie dweeb, but I’d much rather see him go out on a Star Trek movie than on Fringe.
