The Pitch

Dave Chapelle’s Block Party meets Gimme Shelter…minus the killing.

The Humans

The RZA, The GZA, Masta Killa, Ol’ Dirty Bastard, Raekwon, Ghostface Killa, Method Man, U-God, Inspectah Deck, Capadonna, Chang Weisberg, Carla Garcia, Brian Valdez, and many, many, more.

The Nutshell

We follow 2004 Rock the Bells concert promoter Chang Weisberg about 48 hours (and counting), until the first gathering of the entire Wu-Tang Clan in nine years. Intercut with interviews with members of the Wu-Tang Clan, managers, journalists, family members, DJ’s, and many others, we get a fascinating look at how difficult it was to set this up, the history of Wu-Tang, and how close it came to not even happening.

chang

The Lowdown

While watching this, I couldn’t help but think of Dave Chapelle’s Block Party. Both focus on a small group of people trying to organize and set up an ambitious gathering of well known hip hop and rap artists. What Rock the Bells does better then Block Party is showing the down and dirty details of how difficult it is to get over 10,000 people in a venue, how difficult it is to get the entire Wu-Tang Clan together in one place at the same time, and how easy it is for things to go wrong.

The first half of the film focuses on Chang Weisberg and his right hand men and women rushing around town. Chang goes out at three in the morning, wrapping telephone polls (illegally) with concert posters. Thousands of fliers are passed out around town. Chang’s production manager, Brian Valdez, attempts to take care of a legal pad filled with lists of things that need to get done. Carla Garcia, Chang’s right hand woman, haggles with last minute flights for Wu-Tang, and makes cash deals with special guests who need a little bit more money. Especially special guest, Redman, who we see on the phone haggling for cash and pot.

the list

The ambitiousness of the documentary allows for dozens of intimate scenes with all the players involved. There was a camera and camera operator for every member of Wu-Tang as they arrived, for every pre-show guest, for Chang, for Carla, for Brian, and dozens for the crowd, backstage, and for the thousands waiting in line. One of my favorite moments is when Redman arrives with his son Reggie. Redman tells Reggie he has to go and Reggie starts to cry.  Redman kisses him and gives him a hug and tells him "What have I told you about that tears shit?"

Around half way through the film, the pre-show for the concert starts and this is where the film really takes off. Several DJs start the show off, and go a bit too long. This results in a pretty hilarious scene with Brian Valdez as he nervously walks back and forth and attempts to tell them that they need wrap it up. And one of the best scenes of the whole film take place here, when free-style rapper, Supernatural, takes the stage and proceeds to own the place. He gets down off the stage, stands with the crowd, and raps an entire song about items that the crowd hands to him. It was seeing music being created right in front of you, and it brought the same type of lyrical joyousness that the music creation scenes in Hustle and Flow brought.

rtb tickets

As this is all happening, things are not going well for Weisberg. Problem number one: after a few calls, they’ve found out that Ol’ Dirty Bastard is at his hotel, so baked out of his mind that he can’t walk or talk. Problem number two: there are thousands of people waiting in line. They’ve been waiting in line for hours, and they’re getting unruly. Fights break out.  Chang tries to calm them down, but to no avail…they rush the gate. Around this part the film turns into an odd sort of heist film as Chang walks $70,000 in cash off the premises in a large box, covered by a towel, surrounded by an unruly mob.

From here on out, the film builds to a fascinating and tense climax. Much of it is focused on Ol’ Dirty, and he’s actually made out to be a villain of sorts.  He insists that he won’t come out of his hotel. That he just doesn’t want to be there. But then Ol’ Dirty’s history is explored. We get interviews with his mother and the rest of the Wu-Tang, and how his drug problems and (especially) his jail time, turned him into a completely different person.  He was paranoid, thinking that everybody was out to get him, and it really turns him into a sympathetic character, especially considering that he died four months after the concert.

Ol' Dirty

The film ends up being about more then just a concert documentary. It’s about the persistence of three people keeping more then 10,000 people happy. The directors weave this thread in and out of the history of the Wu-Tang Clan and how important they are to the fans and to the hip hop industry.

The Package

Quite an array of features to choose from, all of them worthwhile. All of them seem like they would have been in the documentary had they not had to whittle the over 200 hours of footage into an hour and 40 minutes.

Whether you’re a fan of hip hop or not, this is a fascinating documentary, and one worth finding if you can. The power of Ol’ Dirty compels you.

DVD REVIEW: DOG PROBLEM, THE

title

the coverBUY IT FROM AMAZON: CLICK HERE!
STUDIO: Velocity/Think Film
MSRP: $27.98
RATED: R
RUNNING TIME: 89 Minutes
SPECIAL FEATURES:
· Commentary with Scott Caan and Giovanni Ribisi

The Pitch

Scott Caan Must Love Dogs because he put one in his movie.

The Humans

Giovanni Ribisi, Lynn Collins, Scott Caan, Kevin Corrigan, Mena Suvari, and Don Cheadle

The Nutshell

Solo is a failing writer. He’s written one book that few people read, and even fewer people liked. He’s broke because he has been going to therapy every day for a year. When his therapist tells him to get a dog, his life gets a little strange for a few days. He hangs out with his best friend Casper, meets a celibate stripper, and gets messed up with a loan shark who he owes money to.

shrinking
The Incredbile Shrinking Caan.

The Lowdown

The Dog Problem is a surprisingly solid little romantic comedy, written and directed by one half of the Malloy Brothers: Scott Caan. You can tell that this isn’t Caan’s preferred fare, as he even says in the excellent commentary track, he is more at home with making gritty, down-and-dirty, films. That said, I don’t think he gives himself enough credit. Caan isn’t interested in showing off with the camera. He lets his characters and actors do the work for him. Which is smart, because everybody involved is doing what they do best.

Giovanni Ribisi plays the lead character of Solo with his unavoidable Ribisi ticks. He’s nervous, he’s jumpy, he stutters, and he constantly sounds like he’s in need of a glass of water. Caan plays Solo’s best friend, Casper. He’s a photographer who has apparently taken naked pictures of every gorgeous woman in California. Caan is charasmatic as hell, and has great chemistry with every other actor in the film. He’s not in it much, but when he is he adds a lightness and sense of fun and camraderie.

dog?
"Don…it’s behind us…don’t pay attention to it…just slowly unlock your door…"

And Caan has chosen well with the casting of his ladies. Lynn Collins plays Lola, the woman he meets at a dog park and who also happens to be a celibate stripper. Mena Suvari plays a young, spoiled rich girl who is bored all the time and passes that time by adopting small dogs from people who don’t want them. She forms a romantic relationship with Kevin Corrigan’s loan shark character. Corrigan is funny in whatever he’s in and makes the most out of the material he’s given, whether it’s a five minute scene in The Departed or given a character with more screen-time, like in this film. Don Cheadle plays the thankless roll of Solo’s therapist. He’s in about three scenes, but he makes the most out of all of them. One other actress I forgot to mention. Sarah Shahi:

sarah

She also makes the most out of every scene she’s in. She plays Lola’s stripper friend, Candy, and is Casper’s fling of that particular evening.

Caan writes dialogue that is smart and snappy, but without the annoying showiness that Kevin Smith and Joss Whedon are known for. His dialogue sounds like what people would actually say, and each character has their own voice.

It’s too bad smaller films like these don’t end up getting seen by many people. There are so many bad romantic comedies released every year to theaters that are attended in droves and these gems get overlooked on the shelf as they reach for Because I Said So. It’d be nice to see smaller, original voices get a shot at the big screen. The Dog Problem may ultimately be light fare, but in the end it’s got something to say about people, love, and loneliness, which is more then most unrealistic high concept romantic comedies even dream of doing.

The Package

Like I said before, there is an excellent commentary track with Caan and Ribisi. It’s fun, energetic, and informative: everything a good commentary track should be.

DVD REVIEW: SCRUBS – SEASON 6

Scrubs6Art

BUY IT AT AMAZON: CLICK HERE!
STUDIO: Buena Vista Home Entertainment / Touchstone
MSRP: $27.99
RATED: N/A
RUNNING TIME: minutes
SPECIAL FEATURES:

The Pitch

It’s Grey’s Anatomy meets Naked Gun by way of a bad meth trip.

The Humans

Zach Braff, Sarah Chalke, Donald Faison, Neill Flynn, Judy Reyes, Ken Jenkins, John C. McGinley.

The Nutshell

Drs. JD Dorian (Braff), Elliot Reid (Chalke), Christopher Turk (Faison), Perry Cox (McGinley) and the rest of the looney tunes workers of a hospital apparently set in a Twilight Zone-on crack universe do their best to try to save lives. That is, they do their best to save lives when they’re not concerned with who’s sleeping with whom, whose insane relative rolls into town, what nutbag, highly whacky and improbable situation arises or when a reality itself seems to all of a sudden take a side turn Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas-style.

The Lowdown

Check out my Season 5 review here where I attempted my best to describe the goings-on of this utter lunacy of a show where the jokes fly a mile a second and reason and logic are checked at the last commercial before the episode starts. I came up with damn near every euphemism and metaphor I could think of to describe the insanity portrayed by Scrubs in every episode and I still probably only barely scratched the surface. So let me reiterate my first impression of this show: this is the most whacked thing on the tube. Period. And it’s ridiculously funny. This is a show where Britney Spears’ VMA performance, as seen through a mescaline haze would come across as an everyday occurrence. This show is not in reality as we know it, and that’s why it works so well.

Season 6 seemed to up the ante on a lot of the characters’ lives and relationships. For instance, JD discovers that he’s going to be a father via his relationship with Dr. Kim Briggs (the de-lectable Elizabeth Banks); Carla and Turk are preparing for her imminent delivery of their child; and Elliot transitions over to a private practice and begins to enjoy the financial benefits that it entails, which leads to issues with JD. Dr. Cox and Jordan are also preparing for the birth of their second child, and all of this baby fever eventually makes Elliot feel left out at times. Although she has her own issues with her boyfriend Keith and how far he wants to take their relationship. Plus, there’s a tragic death of one of the Sacred Heart staff that affects everyone in the hospital.

In the season premiere, "My Mirror Image", JD deals with the news of his impending fatherhood, Carla and Turk are at DefCon 1 with their kid’s pending arrival, and Cox is worried about how his anger issues affect his relationship with his son. In "My Coffee", JD and Kim seek to get to know each other better, Carla has postpartum issues about wanting to return to work, and Elliot tries to convince a surgeon with much more experience that his own self diagnosis may not be right for his own medical condition. "My Musical" finds a patient who wakes up in the hospital and sees all of te goings-on as a musical." "My Night to Remember" has a memory loss patient as the catalyst for looks back at previous episodes. And in the season finale, "My Point of No Return", JD and Elliot start to have seconds thoughts about whether or not they made the right decision to not be together even as Elliot is preparing for marriage.

Season 6 has shown no real drop off in the quality of the shows and there are still plenty of "gadget episodes" where the stories are told from unique POVs such as "My Musical", "His Story IV" (Kelso’s POV) and "My Night to Remember." Relationships change in Season 6 and some improve, while others go more astray. Scrubs has been advertised as half as long as ER and twice as funny. I’d say that’s pretty apt as the laughs still come in bucketloads in Season 6 and the heavier stuff also weighs in to keep the balance to this whacky TV show.

The Package

11 Audio Commentaries (My Best Friend’s Baby’s Baby & My Baby’s
Baby, My Coffee, My Perspective, My Fishbowl, My Scrubs, My No Good
Reason, Their Story, My Cold Shower, My Conventional Wisdom & My
Point Of No Return), The Making of "My Musical", Judy Keeps Talking,
The Debra & Stephanie Show, The "Third Tier", 12 Deleted Scenes,
Alternate Lines, Outtakes & an Easter Egg

MCP: WEEKLY GAME FIX- 12/31/07

Whole bunch of Wii titles this week, and that’s it! Guess some kiddies still have Christmas cash to spend. Or don’t, considering all these titles are budget games and hit for around 20 bucks. Nothing too exciting, of course… but since Xbox Live’s being all spotty, maybe you’ve got nothing else to do.

As if Amazon somehow knew that no one would want these titles, NONE of them have a link on the site. How often can you say that? Wow. But the downloadable games hitting this week are a helluva lot better….

Expect some much more exciting games coming up in the upcoming weeks! Hope you’ve all got fun plans for tonight for New Year’s- as for me, I’m hitting up a bar that’s open until 10 AM and will have free White Castle sliders available at 4:00, which is either the most brilliant idea ever made, or the most dangerous one. I’m not quite sure yet, but we’ll see. Have a good one, fellas.

 Kidz Sports: Basketball (Wii)
Buy this instead from Chud here!

HEY KIDZ! Like Basketball? Like bad games? Pick up this budget title for the Wii and be the envy of all your friends on the playground!

Know what’s funny? You could get every Kidz Sports game ever made for 5 bucks on PC! Which I’m sure you’d want to, immediately!

I know kids are stupid, but do they really fall for this crap?

 Classic British Motor Racing (Wii)
Buy this instead from Chud here!

Talk about a niche title. I’m sure a racing game full of Minis and Rovers must make someone somewhere exited out there, but I’m not sure they own Wiis.

Also less exciting is that it’s made by the same company who made…

  Monster Trux Offroad (Wii)
Buy this instead from Chud here!

…this game. Can we all agree that ending a title with an X or Z doesn’t make it any more exciting or enticing for the younger generation? Can we do that, please?

Also, why would you buy this when you can buy Excite Truck is beyond me. These guys even ripped off the cover art!

 Rig Racer 2 (Wii)
Buy this instead from Chud here!

RIGGGGGGG RACER returns! Wait, what? No, I never heard of Rig Racer either, but this sequel was a European-only release for the PS2- back in 2005. A racing game with trucks that lacks the charm of Big Mother Truckers, if you can get your head around that one.

I like the synopsis. "Featuring realistic weather conditions –from sunshine to heavy rain and even light showers." Even light showers? Fuck me. That is realistic.

Myth Makers: Orbs of Doom (Wii)
Buy this instead from Chud here!

Not sure how this Skinny Puppy album became a video game series, but we can all agree how twisted it must… Oh, it has nothing to do with that? Nevermind.

But yeah, there was a Myth Makers Mario Kart game released just last month, and now they have a Monkey Ball ripoff. Seriously, it’s creatures inside balls rolling around as you balance the Wii remote. Why you wouldn’t pick up the originator of the "genre", blah blah blah.

-Downloads for the week!-

Monday’s Virtual Console titles

 Bubble Bobble (NES – 500 Points – $5)

This is one of those games that you’ll instantly want to buy because of your childhood memories. How many afternoons were spent trapping your enemies in bubbles and popping those suckers? Ahh, the good old days. This is definitely worth a purchase for most, unless you’ve got one of those hundreds of Bust a Move games that include it in the special features. About time for a real sequel to this, isn’t it? I’d love to see this as an Xbox Live title with new graphics and online play…

 Light Crusader (Genesis – 600 Points- $6)

This is a Treasure (Gunstar Heroes, Radiant Silvergun, Sin and Punishment) game that you might not have heard about, but there might be a reason for that. The game’s their first and only RPG, an isometric slasher like Landstalker or Beyond Oasis with a very Western style. Apparently the puzzles get annoying, and there isn’t much of a combat system, but you really can’t go wrong with anything the company has released, their first title notwithstanding. I really am glad Treasure is getting a lot of love from both the Wii and the Xbox360’s downloadable services, as it’s nice to see kids getting into some of the classics they would never have otherwise.

 Top Hunter (NeoGeo – 800 points – $8)

AKA Top Hunter: Roddy & Cathy, which describes the two main characters you fight with in this side scrolling adventure game. Top Hunter looks a lot like a certain other SNK shooter (see below), which is to say, pretty damn good. It’s also one of those games which utilize two different planes which you can jump back and forth from to solve puzzles and such. Always wanted to play this one, this might get a download from me.

Wednesday’s Xbox Live Arcade titles

 Metal Slug 3 (Arcade – 800 Points – $10)

While I have nothing but love for the Metal Slug series, I’m not sure this is such a great deal at 800 points. You can pick up every Metal Slug game ever made on the Wii or PS2 for a few bucks more. Course, this is one of the best in the series, and the new HD graphics, achievements and online multiplayer make it much more enticing. Definitely can’t go wrong for this, and it’s a pretty great way for Xbox Live Arcade to start off the new year.

SACHA BARON COHEN TELLS TALES OF HOFFMAN

http://chud.com/nextraimages/abbiehoffmanpic.jpgOne of the nice things about being Steven Spielberg – a list that surely numbers into the millions – is that the concept of "dream casting" does not exist. If The Beard wants an actor for a particular role, he’ll simply make the call, and, unless the performer in question has a vested interest in committing career suicide, the deal will be done.

Such was surely the case with Sacha Baron Cohen accepting the role of Abbie Hoffman for The Trial of the Chicago Seven, which Spielberg will direct at some point from a script by Aaron Sorkin. It goes without saying that the puckish Cohen is ideal casting as Hoffman, the counterculture prankster who was at the center of the tumultuous 1968 Democratic Convention protests. Hoffman possessed a flamboyant personality, a flair for the often inappropriately dramatic, and long, curly black hair on account of being Jewish. Obviously, Cohen embodies all of these attributes. What could possibly go wrong?

It’ll be interesting to see what Sorkin does with the material, which, given the title, is expected to focus on the wild trial of what was initially the Chicago 8 (Bobby Seale was ultimately tried separately, but not before getting bound-and-gagged!). The 7 were a raucous, witty lot; in fact, the trial transcript itself was entertaining enough to get turned into an HBO movie back in the 80s. Hopefully, Sorkin doesn’t go overboard in the application of his overtly urbane style; there’s not much need for embellishment here.

Lincoln is, as far as I know, still set to be Spielberg’s next film, so I guess it’ll be between The Trial of the Chicago Seven and Interstellar for the follow-up. As a Kip Thorne fan, I’m rooting for the latter.

THE SPECIAL EDITION – 12.31.07

banner

I’m going to be tweaking The Special Edition as I start my second year writing the column.  I gotta say, it doesn’t feel like I’ve written the column for a full year, but January 22 was my first one and I pumped out 60 columns throughout the year letting you know what cool shit you could look to spend your cash on every Tuesday. Well, I plan on keeping that up in 2008 but I figure you already know about the SHIT that is coming out each and every week and don’t see any reason to really devote too much time to the Delta Farce’s of the world when I can be letting you know about the latest Criterion release or the newest Japanese monster movie you may not have heard about. That’s what I am going to be aiming for and hope to use this space to let you in on some quality gems lost in the crowds of the Rush Hour 3’s.

Unfortunately, the first day of 2008 presents us with almost nothing in the way of quality new releases, so I’ll just talk about a couple of flicks, one good and one not so good and we’ll go from there.

It is said writer/director Michael Davis sold his script by showing executives animated storyboards with a title card reading: “This is John Woo’s Wet Dream.” While this movie is most definitely not Hard-Boiled, it may be this year’s Crank. There are quite a few nods to the John Woo masterpiece including a shoot-out in the middle of a birth that might bring back memories of the masterful hospital sequence in Hard-Boiled. There is also a shoot-out in a car chase, a shoot-out on a plane, a shoot-out during a sex scene, a shoot-out during a parachute jump and more. The humor is also there with Giamatti hamming it up with gusto as the bad guy in this live action Loony Tunes cartoon. Clive Owen seems to be having a blast after his role in last year’s amazing Children of Men and Monica Bellucci is there to show off her amazing assets. The DVD seems to have some pretty good extras as well, including a documentary and commentary track. It will also be released in Blu Ray.

The movie starts off with a shot of Milla Jovovich nude. When you sit down to watch a brainless monster movie, what better way to start it than that? It’s just too bad the producers of Resident Evil are not out to simply make a brainless monster movie. Faced with the task of keeping the fan boys happy while at the same time make a movie that can be enjoyed by the masses who have never played the video game, the producers have simply made a jumbled mess of what should have been a simple concept. Russell Mulcahy was once a promising director, bringing us the entertaining Highlander movie. Then he went and unleashed Highlander II: The Quickening on the world and lost any credits he had ever raised. After ruining every Highlander fan boys movie, what harm can come with doing the same to the Resident Evil fan? It is also getting a Blu Ray release with some exclusive stuff included on it.
