In a dictionary, the definition for ‘SLAM DUNK’ could probably be the one-sheet to the right. From every direction it appears that the Coen Bros. adaptation of True Grit not only surpasses the original (the first of two Kim Darby remakes that outdo the original in the coming months), it showcases new facets to the filmmakers’ growth and possibly the finest work of cinematographer Roger Deakins’ career.
That is very difficult to do.
As most of you hopefully know, True Grit was one of John Wayne’s most beloved movies. It even got sequelized! It was an iconic role for an iconic guy, but where that film veered from the source novel the Coens have remained faithful. Jeff Bridges, Matt Damon, Josh Brolin, and what apparently is a movie-stealing and legendary child performance from young Hailee Steinfeld.
This is an unmissable film and frankly, one of too few as we enter the 2010 home stretch.
True Grit‘s the reason we did the Sacred Cow list (be amazed by it). The more I thought about the more I realized that damn near any film on that list, if done by them, would be worth watching and something that’d deserve optimism. I think they’re exclusive in that regard.

I'm generally of the opinion that Jeff Bridges couldn't act his way out of a paper bag. I did like him in The Men Who Stare at Goats. And I've always loved the original Tron.
attempt #4
You should have stopped at #3.
hahahaha @2. nicely done.
What happen to Charlotte, NC having a screening?
Yeah, no love for charlotte? I'm crying on the inside….
I'm tired of people saying the original strays too far from the novel. I've read the Coen's script and it's about as similar to the novel as Hathaway's version. I have no doubt the Coens' version will be better, but Hathaway's version is really close to the novel.
Thanks for putting on this screening. I remember seeing the original True Grit in theater as a child with my Dad and it's a great memory. I sure hope the remake is done right! My Dad was in the Navy and we used to go see movies on base for 15 cents and I remember being dropped off one time with just enough to see the movie and the rate had increased to a quarter. Totally off topic for the discussion of the remake, but a nice trip for me down memory lane. Hope it makes new great memories for others.
This looks to be a better take to the original sourse material. Jeff Bridges will be great in this one.

1. There is only one sacred cow currently in existence and it is obviously To Kill A Mockingbird. Never has there been a more perfectly executed book perfectly executed into a movie. 2. done. and done. 3. Tron. Can't. Resist. Tron. 4. See 2. Then see 4 again and repeat. 5. I wish there was a love button.
