Uncharted fans are pissed. You may know this because you are an Uncharted fan, have been dreaming for ages about a movie, and are getting Mark Wahlberg as Nathan Drake. While you may have cringed at the fan who confronted David O. Russell with his pleas of Nathan Fillion, you probably shared the sentiment on some level.
But Joystiq spoke to Uncharted 3 director Justin Richmond, who laughed off all things Wahlberg and rumors of “a family dynamic” trumping mystical treasure hunting. “First of all, all that stuff was denied by David O. Russell,” Richmond said. “He actually called us up and was like, ‘I don’t know what these guys are talking about.’” Allegedly, Wahlberg is not a done deal either, though all his confirmations of “I am going to be in Uncharted” would say otherwise.
So, consider this a bit of distant hope from a vague source. I don’t have to tell you how often “I don’t know what these guys are talking about!” ends up being a preposterous lie when we actually see the movie and realize hey, those rumors and photos were true after all. And Richmond is the director of Uncharted 3, not the film, and his saying “Message received” about Nathan Fillion amounts to very little in the long run.
Still, there could be some fragment of hope here. I offer it to you to interpret as you will. But don’t bank on it too hard, and allow yourself to be crushed when Mark Wahlberg, Joe Pesci and Robert DeNiro end up being the Drake Family Fortune Hunters.
UNCHARTED STORIES MAY BE GREATLY EXAGGERATED, ESPECIALLY BY MARK WAHLBERG

Am I the only one that would like to see Wahlberg be Drake? O. Russell seems to be the only one that can bring out the best in him, so with him directing, I'm more than certain Wahlberg could handle the action and comedic bits.
Nope, you're not the only one, Frank. I think it looks like a good deal to me, too. Wahlberg's claims about the family stuff seemed ridiculous from the get-go, though. DeNiro and Pesci? Sounds like he was just naming names, hoping they would stick.
If wahlberg gets cast, the games over.
Nothing Wahlberg has been in leads me to believe he can play Drake. I think he's really not that great in action, and comedy? Hell no. "The Other Guys" type of humor is not Drake. People say Fillion because it's instantly perfect. I used to call Uncharted 1 "that Nathan Fillion" game. That said, it can be someone else's role, but just not Mark's. I think Wahlberg can be effective in a narrow range of roles; this isn't one of them.
Hey! I'm Mark Wahlberg. You guys know me. Let's go talk to some animals.
Hey, dog. How's it goin'? I like your fur, that looks really great. So you're a dog, right? What's that all about?
Okay, well it was great to meet you. Say hi to your mother for me, okay?
Now I'm gonna talk to a donkey.
Hey, donkey. What's goin' on? You're a donkey, I like that. You eat apples, right? I produce Entourage. Okay, talk to you later, donkey.
Eh, I don't mind Mark being in the movie, but I also don't think he has the general charisma to be drake. The character has a pretty solid personality and style about him, and if they're going to pen a movie based in any way off the games, throwing Wahlberg at the role is like abandoning the game entirely(starting to smell of ewe bolle here). Wahlberg did ok in Max Payne, the movie was a bit of a let down but he did ok because the grim noir style fit his general unemotional performance. Drake.. pretty different. I would prefer mark end up being the best friend/co-adventurer that eventually stabs drake in the back.. the "straight guy" to play off drake's snarky, jocular humor. Drake needs to be played by someone that can really grab a hold of the tits of the characters whit and massage it like a pro, not grope it like a fanboy.. I like Mark, but him as drake is like "right shoe, wrong foot".
I'd like to believe there's a chance negative fan feedback nixes the whole Wahlberg idea…after all, the game series is incredibly popular and will continue to be profitable. As many others have said, he just doesn't fit the role. Whoever it turns out to be, that person will be a "name" star…anyone else in Hollywood qualify?
Comment #8…Dave….You'd like to believe negative fan feedback alters or possibly puts an end to a movie production that hasn't even begun? You sound like a fucking child. Grow up.
Bradley Cooper in A-Team mode would be pretty good. A quick Internet search showed at least a few others think so too.
Wahlberg is so wrong for this it isn't even funny. I'd take anyone over him at this point even Ashton fricking Kutcher.
He should be a villain because he's basically unlikeable.
@#12 — Yeah, it's funny…I hate Kutcher and don't mind Wahlberg, but I still think AK would be better for the role (but I don't want HIM in it either). MW would have no business taking it, with his grumpy meatface and over-earnest knucklehead line-delivery. He's much better at the underdog sports hero thing. Or the dumb American who learns that foreigners are people too. Wit from Wahlberg I CANNOT buy, unless it's, like, jock-wit.
As many people have said before, I'm all for a Wahlberg Uncharted if David O. Russell stays as the guy behind it all. That's really the main thing that I'm concerned about. Yes, nothing is set in stone, which is the main problem. If the film gets to the point where they realise that Russell is a difficult director maybe they'll eject him from the directors chair, keep Wahlberg, then get somebody like John Singleton or Paul WS Anderson. Which would just hurt terribly. Also, are people really that concerned about De Niro and Pesci's names being floated around? I hold some faith that they both still have great performances in them.
