Cinema lost a great character actor today, as Pete Postlethwaite passed away at the age of 65 after a long battle with cancer. Too soon.
I imagine many people (especially here in the United States) knew Postlethwaite’s face more than they knew his name — his craggy and stern demeanor was lurking in films that were truly great, films that were quite small, and films that were pure and utter popcorn. Postlethwaite did them all, and he was memorable in every single one of them.
Steven Spielberg called him the best actor in the world, a compliment Postlethwaite laughed off with typical humbleness.
He only earned one Oscar nomination in his long and illustrious career for In the Name of the Father, but he deserved a dozen more. But its actors like Pete Postlethwaite who have all the guts and none of the glory. The character actors such as he often do the really heavy work of building a fictional world we invest in. It’s how we know their faces, and not their names and it seems so unfair in the end.
Rest in peace, Mr. Postlethwaite. We’ll miss your warmth, humor, and menace. And they should have found enough lights to spell your name out.
WE'LL MISS YOU, PETE POSTLETHWAITE

Rest in *peace* …
This dude was awesome, and the best Kaiser Soze lawyer ever!
He's one of my favorite actors, and I'm so sad to see him go. What an inauspicious start to the year.
Brutal. This fucking sucks.
Dear Elisabeth, I can't make out whether you're joking or not. So just in case: his name was Postlethwaite.
Good Ol' pete once stepped on my dogs tail and then beat me with his cane when little snappy nailed him on the ankle. Complete twat. I was five years old.
"And they should have found enough lights to spell your name out."
And you should have spelled it correctly.
Rest in piece, Mr. Postlehwaite/Posthewaite!
It was an accident, and I apologize. I don't suppose anyone here has EVER made a mistake while writing something emotional. I'm sorry to him. I loathe writing obits for this reason.
Instead of flaming me, why not discuss his films? Surely that's a better use of time and energy?
He was never bad in anything. Ever. And mostly he was great.
Aw fuck, what a shitty start to the year. Fuck fuck fuck fuck. Where do I start? Amazing in In The Name Of The Father. Great in Usual Suspects, great in Romeo + Juliet, best thing in Lost World, the best of the "unknown baldies" in Alien3….the guy just ruled every film he was in. Fuck this sucks.
As far as the pure popcorn goes,I loved him in DragonHeart.
A real shame, but… how on earth do you pronounce his name??
Ditto Preston. The first I remember seeing him was in "Dragonheart" and he made a huge impression in an otherwise forgettable movie–the definition of a great actor. In mediocre stuff like "The Lost World", he was the best thing on screen. I didn't even know he was sick and learning that, I am surprised he appeared in "Inception", where his role was so close to his real life situation.
I had no idea of his condition, I wish for peace and comfort to his family and unto him as well.
Such a talented actor too, I first saw him in Brassed Off and his speech in the symphony hall was amazing.
It seems dsfwe is moved to incoherence by sorrow.
No. I will not miss him.
A sad loss: Pete was always a quiet, yet magnetic presence in every role he took on, even bringing dignity to crap like The Lost World. While we're dealing with the gloomier side, Anne Francis passed over the weekend, again after a long battle with cancer. Not the world's most prolific or lauded actress, but her portrayal of Altaira in Forbidden Planet is one of the touchstones of SF cinema, and with her passing we've lost one more connection to a more measured, cerebral and wonder-filled era of movie-making.
A damn shame. @#12: It's basically "Poss-ell-thwait". @#5: Hush now. Play with your paper windmill.
Loved this guy. And as far as people not knowing his name, my wife mentioned it yesterday, but didn't know who he was. Luckily, we'd watched The Town a week ago, so the florist was fresh in her mind and she instantly remembered him. Brilliant actor.
