Default Crash - 1996

I watched this for the first time a few nights back. I was a little unprepared for how effed up it was. I guess between HOV and EP, I'd forgotten just how sick Cronenberg could be. It was art, and yes, it was fascinating, but it was also one of the most disturbing films I've seen in quite a while. The entire film was kind of a "WTF" moment.

Cronenberg is absolutely one of my favorite filmmakers. I really liked CRASH for years. How it explores a weird fetish in a straight-forward way intrigues me. However, I've slowly begun disliking this movie more and more because it's TOO cold. Not only in the blue/black photography, in the flat performances (except for Koteas, who is GREAT), but in the overall lack of passion towards sex. I know that's the point of the movie.

I love that about it, because I've always read the film as a very dry black comedy. The performances underline the singlemindedness with which all the characters are trying to get off, which is endlessly funny to me ("I want big tits that I can get smashed and crushed on the dashboard!").

I consumed this last night and was actually unimpressed with the intensity- I was prepped for something much more pornographic. That said, it was certainly perverted in the best way.

I just don't feel like the film revels in perversion in the way that something like Videodrome does. JetmanX characterizes it well- it's too cold to be as effective as it might. Still dug the shit out of it.

Bear in mind we're talking about 1996 intensity. Much different to 2009 intensity.

I always loved the message behind the book it was based on, the idea of society caught in a fetishistic acceptance of cars, despite them being a "perverse technology" that causes all sorts of horrific damage.

For a film that does it right: IN THE REALM OF THE SENSES. It's far more graphic than CRASH. It's violence is bloodier. It's characters are just as twisted. The sex is all real. But passion fuels the filmmaking, no matter how twisted it gets. It's not an intellectual analysis like CRASH.

Now, Bill's quick capsule review: piece of shit. Thank you. That's all it was, by the way. Don't get caught up in all the phony hysteria over this piece of shit film. "Was it too sexist, or what about –" You're way off base. You've forgotten how to perceive correctly. Take a deep breath, watch it again: "I think it's a piece of shit." Exactly. That's all it ever was, was a piece of shit. Just had to say that and clear it up. All this phony hype around this piece of shit film drove me crazy."
