Back in September upon viewing the first trailer for Hansel & Gretel: Witch Hunters I wrote, “There are blind, legless post office workers who could still manage better delivery than what’s on display.” It was also around this time I started hearing rumblings of a pre-finished effects test screening gone horribly awry. But I’ll be damned, this new red band is a vast improvement. At least they’re not taking themselves seriously, which may have something to do with Will Ferrell’s producer credit here. There’s also some decent gore happening that helps cast the disjointed delivery in a better light.
You’ll also find a new poster below the trailer. Is “Classic Tale. New Twist.” really their tagline the studio’s going with? They’re supposed to be selling a horror movie, not a new flavor of Sprite:

Is that Bram Stoker’s Dracula font on that poster? If so, that may have sold me on the fun ridiculousness of the movie. I am a shallow man.
There’s something really thuggish and hateful about this trailer I can’t put my finger on. The snarky 21st-century asides (“Awesome!”) don’t exactly help either.
“Not as bad as Van Helsing” isn’t something a movie should aspire to. Still Gemma Arterton’s ass in leather pants gets mine in theaters.
Nice, I can never convince my leather pants to go to the movies.
There is, isn’t there? Maybe it’s because the historical persecution of “witches” isn’t exactly something that looks great from a modern perspective.
I am a little intrigued by the little monologue at the end, though, which suggests there might be a slightly more complex morality at work than the usual “slaughter the evil creatures” mentality.
“Not as bad as Van Helsing” is something ALL movies should aspire to.
All I can think of is the Looney Tunes version: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KWXEqHUx-6o
