You may have thought that Arnold was busy this past decade, being governor of California and all. Wrong! What he was really doing, as we learn in this Last Stand panel (moderated by Harry Knowles), was asking Universal “to guht seereous about dee Conan seeries.”
The video is insightful from the standpoint that Arnold wants to take a more nuanced approach to the character, one that I’m not sure even the original had. But pushing for A-List talent to involve themselves is hardly a bad thing, though his wince at the phrase “B-Movie” troubles me. I don’t see how The Legend of Conan could work as anything but a B-Movie.
And yet, I think to myself, the best B-Movies are made by filmmakers who don’t realize they’re making B-Movies.

I’ve been wanting a King Conan since I saw the original. I just love the idea of this guy who’s naturally a warrior and a nomad being saddled with a kingdom and what does he do with it. I want to see that story.
Also, they can’t go in with the idea that they’re making a B-Movie. That hardly ends well.
There was an interview in the 90s where Ahnult and James Cameron were discussion the first Terminator. At one point, Ahnult describes the film as a “B movie”. The look on Cameron’s face was priceless.
I second the need and sentiments for King Conan.
OMFG this would rock if it happens. Insofar as the “B Movie” thing is concerned — Alien (the original Ridley Scott film) is in essence a “B Movie”, it just got a better budget and serious consideration from its director and producers.

Is there any particular reason why no one seems to want John Milius back in the director’s chair? Is it a combination of his political views and “post-Lucas/Spielberg-Phantom Menace/Kingdom Skull” ennui that makes everybody averse to the idea?

I think I heard a while back he might have suffered some type of health issue, a stroke I believe. Everyone kept referring to how full of life he used to be and now he struggles just to (fill in the blank). I’m pretty sure that’s why he might not be able to come back for this one.
I don’t know about you guys but I think there is a bargain to be made with John McTiernan. I just finished watching the original DH and DHWAV and they are awesome. Since he has been in jail, figuratively(director’s jail) and literally, you could probably get the man for a bargain and I bet he’s chomping at the bit to prove himself. I love me some 13th Warrior and I think that the oft-mentioned director’s cut would prove that it was Crichton who f-ed that enterprise up. What do you guys think? McTiernan for Legend!
