Mileage may vary on this kind of thing, but I think even for a film that is so cynically just “Die Hard in the White House” this looks kind of cheap and thin. Nothing against Gerard Butler doing his John McClane thing and Morgan Freeman cutting his check and Aaron Eckhart being white, but a fight scene in an unlit oval office with some CGI plane explosions over DC doesn’t cut it. This is Olympus Has Fallen from Antoine Fuqua, and it hits on March 22nd.
We’ve got a second chance for this kind of movie with White House Down later this year, which stars Channing Tatum and Jamie Foxx, and has Roland Emmerich behind it- perhaps the man responsible for destroying the White House more than any other human being. Hopefully slow and steady will win this race. We’ll keep an eye peeled for that trailer.

I like this kind of generic fun. COLE HAUSER!
Yeah, they could have dialed back the cg, but I think this looks like good mindless fun.
I was going to see it, but Gerard Butler looks too old in that poster. Maybe they should airbrush him a little.
FYI, Cole Hauser is also in A GOOD DAY TO DIE HARD.
nice one.
I know the CGI isn’t as bad, but why did I think of “Plan 9 from Outer Space”?
Look, it’s Time Crisis: The Movie!
I love how everybody get’s their balls hung up on “bad cgi”. I don’t care as long as they aren’t ScyFy bad. I grew up watching King Kong and japanese-giant-monster-movies fer christ’s sake. The action and story look entertaining… kinda like Die Hard, which is not a paragon of cinema. I’ll catch this one.
Oh suuuuuuuuuuuure, King Kong and japanese-giant-monster-movies were great, but the problem with modern CGI is it’s so good that when it’s not quite up-to-the-mark it’s the inorganic version of the uncanny valley.
