Stephen Chow (Kung Fu Hustle, CJ7) has a new film on the horizon: Journey To The West (aka A Chinese Odyssey). The comedic fantasy actioner is currently scheduled for release across the big blue next month. Chow unfortunately doesn’t star this time, but the fact that he wrote and co-directed it is more than enough to pique my interest…as is the this trailer:
I’m not sure what I just watched, but as a fan of Shaolin Soccer and Kung Fu Hustle, I definitely like what I’m seeing here. The film doesn’t have U.S. distribution yet, but here’s hoping it get scooped up soon and we get to see it sometime this year.

My guess is that this is an adaptation of the ancient Chinese story of Monkey. Gorillaz/Damon Albarn released an opera about this titled Monkey: Journey to the West and there was a game recently called Enslaved(written by Alex Garland) which is basically about the same thing. Some of the same characters are in this trailer, but this seems nothing like these other two works. I guess there are many interpretations on this story, but the original was a novel entitled Journy to the West. I don’t know enough about it other than I own both of the things I mentioned above.
