The Marvel Cinematic Universe isn’t entirely a sausage fest, what with women like Scarlett Johansson, Natalie Portman, and Gywneth Paltrow running around, but it has been awfully… pale, so far. That and the fact that, as of yet, the ladies are not exactly running the show means it’s exciting news indeed that Zoe Saldana may be joining in on the fun.
Apparently circling the role of Gamora, it will ironically enough put her in the green skin of Thanos’ stepdaughter, who has been a member of the Guardians Of The Galaxy in the last few years. Saldana dodged the green skin when she landed her Star Trek role, but now it’s full circle for her.
The character is one among the many hyper-sexualized heroines in the Marvel Universe, with her costumes often being of the most shameless variety. Naturally she was the victim of rape in a super-duper-edgy-you-guys Marvel storyline- a fact noted on her Wiki page, which lacks any details about her actual, you know, personality. As far as her powers goes it’s mostly strength and healing type stuff, along with cosmic martial arts training that allows her to go toe-to-toe with invulnerable superpeople.
My fingers are crossed that the nature of the property and Gunn’s involvement means we’ll have the most pro-active and exciting Marvel screen heroine yet in Saldana’s Gamora.

Is there some rule somewhere that says all strong female characters in comic books have to be raped at some point? It’s old now and frankly just annoying and not at all creative.
Rule? No. Or maybe, really. A format dominated by male writers/editors is the cause. It’s the easiest way to portray a lead up to anger and grief I guess. Why else would a silly woman dare dream of empowering herself? Right? And let’s not forget in a medium perpetually on the brink of collapse, they need something to grab attention. The word RAPE sells picture books. Silly comics.

The issue isn’t so much rape as how its handled. As with a lot of popular media, it’s used as a a short hand or an opportunity to do a “very special issue.” And then it’s packed up and put away until the next “very special issue.”
It doesn’t help that sex, as a whole, is a really poorly handled issue in comics, leaving women to either be completely passive objects of desire, or act like men with breasts. In some ways, sadly, rape is the only “acceptable” form of sex to even have in a comic.
Oh, and the other problem is that “character building rape” is only something that happens to female superheros. And, on the rare occasion when a male superhero is “raped” it’s always by a hot super villian with whom the hero has built up a LOT of sexual tension.
First off, I am male. But I’m curious why you felt the need to attack someone’s stance AGAINST rape and the fact that a few of us agreed that it has become a trite circumstance in comics. So your stance is “Yeah rape!” because the comics are predominantly a male industry and women just don’t have the ingenuity to write a non-rape story? And anyone against rape is attempting to shame men? Ludicrous.

But thank you very much for attempting to frame this as a debate where I’m supporting rapists. There will be no more interaction between us for two reasons. The first is that if you decided to frame what I said as supporting actual rapists then this is a highly dishonest nonsense response and I have no need to talk to people like that. The second is you were too stupid to make the distinction between supporting rapists, and supporting the comic book industry when it comes under attack from people who buy the lie that comic books NEED to be anything different from what they are. Usually the latter comes from the feminist propaganda stations like feminist frequency and anybody stupid enough to watch that channel. Anyway, next time you’re fed up of too much rape in comic books (other peoples creative endeavors, what have you done recently?) why don’t you write your own, or better yet, you and Renn can come up with a Rape quota. As soon as women sign up to the armed forces or police force at a rate of 1:1 with males, THEN I will complain with you about representations of gender. As of now I’m fine with my hero:regular character ratio being skewed (in line with reality). I’m not saying I wouldnt like to see more female heros but I’m not using phrases like ”awefull pale” to describe the Marvel Cinematic Universe in any way other than to describe Christopher Hiddleston.
