No shame here: Starship Troopers is one of my favorite movies of the 90s, and might be my favorite sci-fi action type movie ever. I have watched that film maybe a hundred times, and I shout and cheer every time – even when I’m not drunk.
That said, I haven’t seen Starship Troopers 2: Hero of the Federation, despite it having been written by Ed Neumeir and directed by FX legend Phil Tippett. It didn’t have any of the original characters – how hard is it to meet Casper Van Dien’s quote?!? – and I heard it sort of sucked. But I will be seeing the third film, Starship Troopers 3: Marauder, which is being directed by Neumeir and stars Johnny Rico himself, back in the role that made him eligible to charge money for autographs at Comic Con.
The trailer for the movie premiered at Wonder Con last weekend (when did that convention become such a big deal? It looks like I’m going to have to haul ass to San Fran next year), and now it’s online. The whole thing sort of looks like a rehash of the first movie, but who’s going to complain about that? The film goes straight to DVD later this year.

Thanks for all the non-ironic Starship Troopers love. The first one kicked all sorts of ass. It had aliens, spaceships, guns, superhuman football, tits, ass, and Clancy Brown, everything that makes a good movie.
Damn man, Van Dien looks a bit burnt to shit. Still the movie looks a lot better than the second.
I'm a huge fan of the first movie. I also think it's a really smart movie, and listening to the dvd's audio commentary definitely bears that out. "…War makes fascists of us all," says Paul Verhoeven. Indeed.
It's hilarious satire, not laughable kitsch.
As I complained to Sony about the 1st one, where's the frackin power suits!?!
@ P. Lee
Seconded, and those kick ass war hounds!
Will Brenda Strong return? (and not get killed this time) *hope, hope*
Oh good, I'm so glad that Casper Van Dien got some money to pay for his coke habit.
Christ, I hated Johnny Footballhero. This movie should be 'Bugs vs Michael Ironside.'
I agree with Gus thats why I rooted for the aliens. Van Dien is a charisma vacuum. As for more Michael Ironside vs the bugs ticket already bought.
aw man, I LOVE Starship Troopers… the book. I actually enjoyed the second film, mostly for it's ridiculousness and the ending. The first film just frustrates me because it fucks the source material so hard in the bum it's eyes popped out and now it stumbles around blindly searching for its dignity.
T'Pol !!!!
Verhoeven and Ironside are the Scorsese and DeNiro of kicking major ass.
Starship Troopers was a great book (that I recall reading when I was about 10), and a better movie… The 2d one stank like day old diapers… Number 3?? The jury's still out, but let's face it… Watching paint dry was more entertaining than "Hero of the Federation"…
