It’s exactly one year until the opening of Watchmen, as Zack Snyder points out on his production blog, and to commemorate the date he’s released five full character portraits. Almost without exception, they look fantastic.
The Comedian, Rorschach, Silk Spectre, Nite Owl and Ozymandias are revealed in all their ‘faithful to Gibbons’ glory. And while I’m not wild about the slightly petulant Ozymandias (even if that expression is appropriate) it’s hard to take too much issue with any of the other four. The Comedian looks perfect and I’m amazed to see Silk Spectre looking only mildly silly instead of completely ridiculous.

Fuck Yeah!!! That looks so great. In my wildest dreams, I never would've imagined that they would look so cool. I cannot wait for this film. I'm gonna go jerk off now.
I just wish they were proper movie stills instead of muddied up promotional pictures
Awesome stuff. Thanks for posting those here, Devin.
Wow, I am really digging what they did with Nite Owl. Looks like they borrowed the look of Bubo the owl from Clash of the Titans.
Hard to take issue with a lean, mean Nite-Owl? Kind of misses the point of the character, doesn't it? Maybe this costume is a reflection of the 'sculpted' look that gave modern movie heroes like Michael Keaton their hardbodied appearance. I'd be ok with that. But I have the sinking feeling that Synder and co. just couldn't wrap their head around the idea of a superhero that was supposed to look slightly ridiculous.
Lord, those are awful. Veidt's faux six-pack armor made me throw up in somewhere unseemly.
The tone is waaaay off.
Actually, I think the costumes totally reflect the ridiculous nature of superheroes. I really think Snyder has his shit together. Awesome.
Alan Moore's work was commentary on superhero comics … looking at these photos, I suspect Snyder's film will be a commentary on superhero movies. Which is only appropriate, given that it's a film and all.
How can anyone get excited about this?
This looks like "watchmen High". Ho wold are these people? These are supposed middle aged crimefighters, not spandex-wrapped refugees form "the Hills" Wow..Just awful. Why is Ozymandias 16 years old? Why is his head so tiny? The comedian has the worst wig this side of Halle Berry in X-men. Everything looks so damn cheap.
Am I the only one that thinks Nite Owl does indeed look a tad puffy?
I want Rorschach's outfit. STAT.
My initial response was a 'semi' (what we in England call a partial boner if you will). I'm not getting the middle-aged and world-weary vibe that people say these characters should have though. Oh and the Comedian should have a thicker moustache (Tom Selleck where are you?)
Bonus points for the pic of Silk Spectre gettin' ready to pinch one off. Hotness.
*insert frothing nerd rage about character that I do not own or have any real investment in not looking exactly like they did in my sweaty, greasy fantasies*
Wow, pretty impressive coming from a guy who directed the abortion that was 300. Seriously, right when you're about to lose all faith in a filmmaker…I though Dawn of the Dead was decent although it ignored the theme of the original and had way too many music montage moments, but I thought 300 was an utter piece of crap. Everything about 300 was juvenile as can be. Thats why I was pissed when I heard snyder got The Watchmen, but it looks like hell do a decent job…
WOW.
CHEESE.
I'm annoyed with the gripes about them not looking old enough – there are other timelines in the book apart from the 80's 'present', and these shots are likely to be from their heyday. The Comedian looks very much like he's in his post-'Nam, street-riot-suppressing era. Rorschach is just iconic. Adrian looks appropriately arrogant, and the other two are great. I'm sure the satirical objective will come through closer to release, but for now, these shots are selling a dynamism that will help to bring in the non-fanboy element. A solid start for the visuals.
These are publicity still, right? Outside of comic geeks, who would get excited about "that movie with the fat, stupid looking hero!"
These were the right shots to release to raise awareness. The other stuff will be in there, I'm sure.
Seriously, if you've got a gripe about any of these, you need to take ol' Bill Shatner's advice and GET A LIFE.
Yeah, these characters are seen in their prime a bunch of times in the comic. I don't think selling the adaptation with an overweight guy in a tight suit is the way to go, even if it is just to appease some of you….
Personally, I think The Comedian looks perfect, as does Rorschach. Veidt is a little cringe inducing, giving me flashbacks to "Batman and Robin" for some reason, and the Silk Spectre is cool enough along with Nite Owl. This movie seems to be on the right track.
Wow…. I think I just jizzed….
Yes, the Nite Owl paunch made it into the character design! Finally a tubby superhero gets some screen time. These all look fantastic, btw.
I don't think it's an accident that Ozymandias's rubber costume has nipples. Brilliant.
Nite Owl looks eerily close to Batman… Perhaps what they're going for?
People whining about how they look young or Nite Owl doesn't look pudgy enough….it's been said that Snyder is actually aging everyone up for the movie and that they're the young selves in flashbacks. This is probably just promo photos of them in their prime. Relax.
LOL at a the d-bags that always got something to complain about. I'm hyped, good work Snyder.
They aped the worst aspects of modern superhero movies with the Ozymandias and Nite Owl costumes, and the Comedian's mask looks like rubbish.
I have faith. Remember that?
@ #28… how does the Comedian's mask "look like rubbish"?
This should've been directed by Paul Greengrass. Fuck that no talent, Zack Snyder.
@xero I believe that's the point. The costumes in the comic are supposed to be ultra lame exaggerations of comic book super hero costumes (i.e. colorful tights, ridiculous animal-themes, stupid head-gear). These are ultra-lame exaggerations of super hero movie costumes (i.e. rubber, nippled, overly-gritty, neoprene disasters). It actually gives you a lot of faith that Snyder has the right idea here. Where Watchmen was a commentary on juvenile, pulpy comic book super heroes, Watchmen: The Movie is a commentary on glossy, big budget super hero movies.
The nipples on Ozymandias sealed the deal for me. I love it!
It's awesome to see Nite Owl's ship/hovervehicle thing in the background of his shot. Its core style looks really unmolested, which is awesome, as its cheeziness was a pretty iconic piece of his character for me.
These costumes look pretty awesome. Nite Owl looks a little too much like a rejected Batman costume and Ozymandias might look better from a different angle but for the most part these costumes are badass.
Honestly, these look a lot better than i was expecting.
Brilliant. I think the look great. Also…. these look like shots of them in their crimefighting prime, rather than their post-retirement slide. Can't wait to see how Doc Manhattan looks.
Stop complaining that Night Owl looks like Batman – the original character was a Batman rip-off, so, of course it's looks like Batman. It looked like Batman in the novel, you turds.
The pictures are great, and that's not an opinion.
Actually, Night Owl is loosely based on Blue Beetle. Unfortunately, most audiences probably won't get it, and just assume these are rip-offs of other, more popular characters. Moore's original intent was to use establish characters, and through the creative process it was decided he should create his own.
Well, Matt has spoken guys; "great" is not a matter of opinion any more. But snark aside, I dig the costumes and I'm glad we FIANLLY got to see what the cast is going to look like. I agree, these must be during their crime fighting prime, not the "modern" timeline in which the bulk of the story takes place. Any number of these guys would have been easy to make look unforgiveably retarded. I'm just glad to see that isn't the case.
Comedian looks scary! I didn't expect Silk to be so hot. Wow. All looks promising. Like most movies, you just don't know if it's gonna be good until you see it. Nothing here should turn anybody off from that.
