The trades have spoken, and as always they’re telling us things we already know. Variety has confirmed reports from a couple of Canadian papers over
the past week that filming for Terry Gilliam’s The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus has restarted on stages in Vancouver. Says
Variety, “Ledger had completed filming the “realistic” sections, so
Depp, Farrell and Law will play physically transformed versions of his
character when he passes into the other worlds.” Old news there.
The producers, William Vince, Amy Gilliam and Samuel Hadida, added the following statement.
“Since the format of the story allows for the preservation of his
entire performance, at no point will Heath’s work be modified or
altered through the use of digital technology. Each of the parts played
by Johnny, Colin and Jude is representative of the many aspects of the
character that Heath was playing.“
That’s good news; nothing would be worse at this point than to see some obvious trickery going on with Ledger’s footage. The pic will be odd enough with the extra actors taking his place.
Finally, all fears aside, Tom Waits remains on board as the film’s
devil. That’s great news, since while At Play in the Fields of the Lord
had the role Waits was born for, this is at least the part he was
baptized to play.

Tom Waits is playing the devil?! I must've missed that tidbit before. Consider my ticket bought.
What about all of the looping and ADR for Ledger? Will they hire a sound-alike to dub his performance?
I really hope this get Gilliam back on track. I love the man's films but the past few have been, well, I know about all his problems with the studios and his financial backers always skipping town on him. I think he was broken when La Mancha fell through. I think that it really affecting him and his process. But this will not only benefit, though tragically, as being Ledger's final work it will also be afforded a boost by Depp's core fanbase. And Tom Waits as the devil gave me even more to add to my anticipation level. Hopefully they let him loose on the soundtrack.

Likely what they'll do is clean up the production as much as possible and hope they don't have to ADR anything.
The other possibilities are to put together dialogue from alternate takes or re-write something to cover the bad line.

It looks like Gilliam is hanging on to the wall to prevent himself from getting sucked into the black hole where all the financing for his films go. I love the guy's movies, but damn if he doesn't have the worst fucking luck ever.
Hot damn, I can't wait for this movie.
And, interestingly, if it does get completed and released, I think it will be a reversal of Gilliam's bad luck on the scale of the La Mancha disaster. Can you fucking imagine your lead dying partway through production and still finding a way to complete the film?
Terry Gilliam looks more like The Thing every time I see him. I wish he'd say "It's clobberin' time!" just once.
