This will only be news to the Will Eisner fans out there who were hoping for a last-minute flash of blue in the upcoming trailer for Frank Miller’s The Spirit. If you saw the leaked production photos, you saw that the character’s distinctive blue suit had been changed to black. There was speculation that Miller would change the suit’s color in post to bring it in line with the classic depiction of the character.
But AICN’s got an image of one of the expensive toys that will be marketed to collectors, and Denny Colt is still dressed in black. Cue up more cries of fandom’s despair. I’m still waiting for the trailer.

I always figured The Spirit's suit was black, like Superman's hair.

Is anyone who cares about the color of the suit still alive? Why don't you just start arguing about the length of the ears on Batman's cowl from one of those 1940's serials as you scream at kids walking across your lawn.
This movie is looking more and more like Frank Miller's "The Spirit in Sin City: A Fanfic" with every passing day.
Speaking as someone who's never read The Spirit but has seen images of him on the web, I must say that this is an OUTRAGE!!!
I can't say that I'm a true fan of The Spirit…yet. I do have to say that, from what I've seen, The Spirit is a character who isn't afraid of smiling. There's a certain playboy image that he has, as it appears, that is quite charming. Here, he's in black. He lacks that optimistic look of Will Eisner's creation. And I'm worried about that.
The Spirit seems to shop at Banana Republic. Poor spirit.

It's not so upsetting that they've changed they color of the suit per se, it's just very annoying to see what could've been an energetic blast from the past turn into a grim affair using a color palette of Black, White, and Red.
Why is everybody so upset about the palette? I never even heard of The Spirit before Frank Miller got involved. I can't imagine there are so many out there genuinely invested in the color a costume was years ago. And I question those who thought Frank Miller would veer away from the winning formula from Sin City in his first solo outing as director. That said, this movie isn't appealing at all. On any level. Hi bpvalentine. I think people are upset because The Spirit was a big deal in its day and it is a comic that still holds a lot of charm and cleverness. It really was ahead of its time, in a sense Sin City copied its short-story format but with its own style. The original comic really was a quantum leap forward from Superman et al, and it took the superhero medium an age to bother trying to catch up. I find it a shame that The Spirit wears black and has this gritty style because the man had a fun determindely innocent idealism about him which really stood out against the decaying city scapes and the mad serial killers and sultry femme fatales. The comic was a vehicle for rip-roaring adventure tales but it was also dealt with social issues close to Eisner's heart – and The Spirit and his friends were a very warm, very charming group trying to hold a city together not just from crime but the malign influences of poverty and corruption.
I admire Frank Miller's style in Sin City, and it does work for that comic. I also think that if Miller was willing to bring his art style to the comic but leave all the merits, the joy and story-telling verve in then we could have something special. Unfortunately these advance images hint at Sin City 2: In a Hat. Hope I'm wrong, and its just to placate mainstream fans of Miller – but I really want this to be right.
Why not pop down to your local library and check out Will Eisner? Contract With God and Dropsie Avenue by him are also awesome. Cheers matey.
