Universal stepped up to the plate with this sequel. Oh wait, I mean reboot. No, it’s kind of a sequel. Hell, it’s got Stan Lee drinking Gamma Ray irradiated energy drink. Much was made of the studio’s tampering with the film before release date. Thankfully, the quest for more money has allowed for nearly an hour of bonus footage to be uncovered. Hell, if you squint really hard…you might make out Captain America.

People in strange masks murdering young couples always make for a fun Halloween. Largely ignored by filmgoers, The Strangers hopes to make its way into your film collection on Tuesday. While it’s not for everyone, I feel that most horror fans should give it a shot. It doesn’t delve that far into the Based on a True Story horror type. It plays fast and loose with the facts and always ups the ante on the violence.

Ben Stein is a hatchman that made his bones putting words in Nixon’s mouth. When it came time for Stein to chime in for the right, he dropped to his knees faster than a Yes Man in October. Questionable throughout, this documentary makes no attempt to reconcile its statements with the Truth. Give it about a decade and it’ll become a campy lookback at this era’s Moral Reich.

Raul Julia delivers one of the unsung performances of the 1980s, while William Hurt shines in his Oscar winning role. Trying to play as a riff on “Shock Corridor”, the film centers around a former criminal as he works at a psych hospital. Good job, Troy. I'm not sure why you say that MISSING is underrated though. It won the Academy Award for Adapted Screenplay and received nominations for Best Actor, Best Actress and Best Picture! MISSING is a very important work that tells the story of the other September 11th. The one we Americans never talk about…for good reason, too.
I say that's underrated, because the response it doesn't receive anymore.
Hell, I'd be hard pressed to find a lot of people that even remember it. It's insanely great film that kind of faded into the background. Much like this week's other release "Kiss of the Spider-Woman".
OK, you fixed the director credit, but "Strangers" was STILL more successful than you let on, having done way more business than what was expected of it, so calling it "largely ignored" is pretty inaccurate. It outdid "Speed Racer" at a fraction of the budget, and it also held its own against all the blockbusters that were coming out around it.

Strangers did terrific business. Almost 60 mil on a 9 mil budget, so it made tons of cash… especially for a horror movie released during summer. Who let Anderson on here? Dumb idea.

I think it's pretty swell that you are trying to improve this column in such a collaborative way. What would I recommend? Hmmm, are there any cult flicks coming out this week? When is Pieces coming out for instance? It got some love on this site over the summer and no doubt will get some love elsewhere. We missed last week, so I can give the heads up on the 3rd volume of Drive-in Cult Classics (with The Pink Angels, a gay Easy Rider from the early 1970s, just…wow, what the hell is that thing?) being released. Don't sweat any nit picking regarding The Strangers success. Y'know, I forgot about The Missing as well (in fact I thought Criterion had released a Ron Howard film until I saw the cover shot of the helicopter). Anyhoo, keep on keeping on. Best of luck with this week. And I got my wish: CHUD reviewed the Watership Down Special Edition and I now know it does NOT have the commentary recorded with Chris Gore and the film's director.
Good job Troy. Just one suggestion – take this thing in your preferred direction and about as far away as the last guy did. Please no more cutting and pasting, and please bring the thunder in regards to your knowledge and depth.
