Apple has just put up the trailer for the heretofore-under-the-radar third entry in the Underworld franchise, Rise of the Lycans. Set as a prequel to the events of the first movie, Rise tells the backstory of how the war between the Vampires and Lycans began with the verbotten union between Vampire elder Viktor’s daughter Sonja (Rhona Mitra, doing her best Kate Beckinsale, even though she’s a different character) and the Lycan leader, Lucian (Michael Sheen).
If you pay any attention to this site, you know that Underworld is generally reviled, and although Underworld: Evolution is an improvement, it still doesn’t fare much better. I on the other hand, don’t mind the first movie and generally liked the second. Although I’m sure you’re ready to write this off before you see it, a couple of things to keep in mind: creature guru Patrick Tatopoulos finally gets his turn behind the director’s chair. More importantly: NIGHY.
Of course, being that this is a prequel, that also means Sheen and Shane Brolly are back. OK, maybe you can write it off. Anyway, the link is below.

As someone who thinks Rhona Mitra might be the most desirable woman in the world, I very much resent the fact that I'll have to watch a most-likely shitty Underworld movie in order to see her in action. I think Doomsday showed that she is a fine actor and can carry a film, so hopefully this will lead at the least to more work for her. More *good* work. More non-Len Wiseman work.
Also, parenthetically, I'd like to think that at some point her film work will progress beyond all this female domination stuff she's always hired for: Damsel in Distress in Highwayman, bent over a sink in David Gale, raped in Invisible Man, tied up in Doomsday, etc.
Jesus Christ! These Underworld movies are like fucking roaches! Can't we do something about this?

Nighy in a supernatural role makes it worthwhile. Not exactly fine art, but they've managed something pretty cool-looking with the medieval sword and monster action. Sheen is great too, funny he's also the Prime Minister. And hey, Mitra in a skin-tight chainmail-suit, that's watchable!!!
This, by the way, looks like shit tacos.
Underworld wasn't very good but Underworld 2 has the greatest moment in cinematic history. You know it. Where he dies and she looks at his body and then yells "fuck?" That STILL cracks me up.
I don't think a trailer being posted on the official Quicktime site really counts as a "scoop".
I like Rhona Mitra (and her awesome body – Hollow Man!), but like the first two Underworlds… This shall be a rental. Thanks, Netflix!
Look, I'm not made of stone. I despised the first two movies. However, this one has the Mitra, the Nighy, and a whole heap of cool werewolves, y'all. I'm in.
