Empire chatted with Lauren Shuler-Donner, the lady behind the X-Men film franchise, about the possibilty of a Magneto solo film ever happening. The film has been talked about forever, but while X-Men Origins: Wolverine is on its way to theaters next year, there’s been pretty much no forward momentum on the baddie’s origin story.
Shuler-Donner doesn’t quite say as much, but it seems like Magneto‘s fate is tied in to Wolverine‘s. (Which is the recipient of much bad buzz – bad buzz without a solid source. So suspicious.) “[W]e’ll have to see,” she says. “We have a script on Magneto which is actually sort of Magneto and Charles Xavier. It’s Erik and Charles in their early, early years.”
Empire points out that Production Weekly has some more info on that basic plot point: “The professor meets Magneto after the war and while they bond over the realisation that they are alike in their special powers, their differences soon turn them into enemies.”
I had heard some rumors that Charles would be a soldier who liberates Magneto’s death camp, but that would really make no sense as it would create a huge age gap between the two of them. However they meet, the X-Men comic stories that dealt with the doomed friendship of the two always intrigued me. Here’s hoping that the script actually deals, in an interesting way, with how their two philosophies towards mutant liberation came to differ so drastically.

age gap? it need only be withing 10 years difference.
Marvel comics suck now.

Is there a sentence there somewhere?
ww2? This would be when Erik and Charles are muppet baby mutants clumsily figuring out their powers. They plot to take out Hitler, but disagree on a few key points: Muppet Baby Erik thinks Hitler is evil and must die – Muppet Baby Charles thinks Hitler is human and can be rehabilitated or at least studied and learned where evil comes from. This losing combination of ideals fails the mission. Tom Cruise clowns them both with one eye and no accent. They become enemies for life. Checkmate.
If Ridley Scott was directing, they would be playing Monoploy in the picture above…
"without a solid source"?!?!? The action scenes were so bad the producer flew her husband (along with huge silver trailer) in to re-shoot them! That's not rumour, it's fact!
I don't care about Magneto's back story. It's been sketched out, that's good enough. There are hundreds of stories to tell within the X universe. Why this one? No one cares, really no one at all.
I Care. I want to see this.
I don't want magneto's back story either. I'd prefer an contemporary Magneto off-shoot story. Or, if FOX is going to piss all over the franchise like they did with X-men 3, then I'd prefer nothing at all.
Hello true believers! I was there when Cockrum and Byrne were penciling for Clairmont. Kitty Pride was a bit older than me in her first appearance. Now I just don't give a fuck. Fox is cursed.
If Fox were smart,* they'd give the X franchise over to Joss Whedon. His run on Astonishing lived up to the name, and a new trilogy with a mostly new cast by Whedon would make up for X3 and a (supposedly) crappy Wolverine spin off. Do it, Fox!
*They aren't.
Do the story where they meet in the desert and fight nazis together and take nazi gold! #161 amazing!
