I’ll file this one under the “I’ll believe it when I see it” section of my files, as I’m sure most of you will, too; Movie Hole and the Australian newspaper the Herald-Sun are reporting Fox has plans to resurrect Buffy the Vampire Slayer as a new theatrical feature:
“The monster success of girly vampire pic Twilight at the US Box office last weekend could kick open the door for a big-screen return of Joss Whedon’s much-loved Buffy the Vampire Slayer. Rumors are circulating in Hollywood that Whedon has a feature-film script based on his hit TV series ready to roll as soon as a studio is prepared to commit. The Buffy concept was first unveiled as a movie in 1992 with long-forgotten Kristy Swanson in the title role.”
While I’ll admit it’s a possibility, I still think this one’s a ways off, if it even happens at all. Considering the fact we haven’t heard a peep from Buffy creator Joss Whedon and no one has even laid eyes on said script I’d say this rumor’s flimsy at best. Additionally, there hasn’t been any confirmation from Sarah Michelle Gellar’s reps on whether or not this is going down. I can’t imagine Fox would think of moving forward without her returning to her star-making role, unless, of course, the suits want Kristy Swanson to return (yeah, right).
Furthermore, when you consider how Fox butchered the first movie version back in 1992, which inspired the hit TV series, do we really need to go back to the well on this one?

The icecaps and dragons scenario… That sound like a good Roland Emmerich movie. Wouldn't surprise me if he already has a script about something like that floating around…
I always thought Kristy Swanson was way hotter than SMG. I'd prefer her. With that having been said: Bring back Paul Reubens!
This is definitely something Fox WOULD be looking at right now. They need some hits, vampires are on the up-and-up, and Buffy's got a decent fan base. Wolverine will do some good business, but I don't see Dragonball and the new Street Fighter flick doing massive numbers. When is Avatar coming out? Good thing Searchlight acquired some serious(ly good) award contenders for the holiday season. What else has Fox done this year?
I'd believe it more if it said the studio wasn't even considering Whedon (or Gellar) and just going for a reboot.
Without Joss' involement this thing is shite, and I am pretty sure he's not involved in this. Far as I know he is still battling Fox on Dollhouse, so why he would go to bed with the enemy (again), no… I don't see it.

Having said that, with Twilight (which is Buffy-lite after all) being the big hit it is and with True Blood on HBO having a strong fan base, I'd say if it was up to Fox the movie would be greenlit already. Now, if Whedon is game it might happen…
I don't see this happening. Whedon's interest in Buffy went into the Season 8 comic series and nothing he's said has ever indicated he's want to launch it as a film. I mean after getting to do exactly what he wanted with the show and even moreso with the comic would even want to risk the studio screwing him over given his very hot and cold relationship with Fox? Besides it seems like he's got his hands full bringing "Dollhouse" up to speed.
Eh, why not? (If this does well can we get a Serenity sequel? No? Ok, I know… No, I know, it's ok. Sigh.)
Actually I remember an interview with Whedon about the comic versus a potential movie. He said a movie would take priority and if he felt the need to disregard everything in the comic version of season eight, or cherry pick ideas from it, he would.
I'm sure gellar can take time off from sucking dick on the streets of L.A for money (aka The only work she can get now) to do a new buffy movie.
If Whedon even considers working with FOX again, then he's 100% fucking idiot and deserves everything bad that happens to him and his creation. Fuck FOX.
If you look at the wording of that article you see that it side-steps any actual connection between Twilight and Buffy. "The success of Twilight COULD…" & "Rumors that a script is circulating". The two things are disconnected – there probably IS a script, but it's got fuck-all to do with Twilight's success and yes, it's very possible that Twilight's success could get the suits ready to open the chequebook for a new Buffy movie – but that's pure speculation and the article is written as such. Fuck, learn to read! You could have just written your own speculation piece and fucks to that Aussie cunt. (And I say that as an Aussie cunt myself)
Only if Joss Whedon gets to do what he wants.. He needs to have full control. FUCK TWILIGHT! We would all love to see it and a Angel movie as well. But FOX enjoys fucking with people.
Although, I will disagree with everyone on this I thought X files- I want to believe was good. It was a taste of why we all loved the show. It was just an extended episode.(yes, it didn't have a good budget to do what they wanted, but I am sure Buffy won't either) Now we just need the final X files movie.
I wish the best for the Buffy movie.. but yes in the file it goes.
