Today Simon Pegg tweeted a link to something amazing: a 70 minute long video review of Star Wars Episode I: The Phantom Menace. Cut into seven segments on YouTube this is an amazing deconstruction of the first Star Wars prequel that’s both insightful and pants-pissingly funny. It’s amazing that ten years later we’re still talking about Phantom Menace and that there’s still real comedy gold to be mined from it. Here’s part one of the seven part review:

Genius.
This was funny 10 years ago. It isn't anymore.
The ultimate Pegg vent. Beautiful. "Jar Jar Binks made the Ewoks look like fucking Shaft!" – Spaced. God bless you sir and merry Christmas Special.
STFU Wally Q. Did you even watch it? You don't know what you're talking about.
Indeed, this is old to bash to star wars prequels. In hindsight I'm totally with those who say the phantom menace is the most star wars-ish of all the new ones. There's an attempt anyway of making the movie a self contained adventure like the first star wars. But alas it all went all rocky and we got a bunch of wacky sequels to deal with now. I guess Lotr's the new star wars. Don't fuck up the hobbit.
Too bad Devin couldn't take some of Simon's advice and just enjoyed the simplicity and awesomeness of AVATAR. Yeah. I had to go there.
Jar Jar makes the Ewoks look like Shaft? Are you reading my mind, Pegg, circa 2002? AWESOME!
hell YA. funny ten years ago MY EYE! This is fan friggin' TASTIC.
Typical, bashing another fanboy movie that … contrary to the belief on this site … a lot of people LIKED! No, it was not as good as the Original Trilogy, but it is a fun movie and I enjoyed it (and, ahead full-steam flamers, I enjoyed Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull as well). Just to qualify, I am old enough to have seen Star Wars when it was originally released in theaters … so I grew up on it as well. However, I do not feel like Lucas raped my childhood with the prequels and there was no way in hell he would have EVER been able to reach my expectations … so it is continually annoying to me when people indicate that he has done something to "tarnish" his legacy or the legacy of Star Wars by making more movies. Just because you don't like them, doesn't mean they aren't good. I could use an equally stupid argument and inform you that the movies themselves performed exceptionally well at the box office and (SHOCKER!) on DVD as well (meaning enough people liked what they saw to buy it a second time). Oddly enough, such a "horrible" trilogy of movies such as this has spawned video games and television series' long after they were released. I guess that means they suck still too? But, as I said earlier, you don't have to LIKE the movie just because of those facts either! In summation, I am long over the elitist views of people that find it fashionable to not like something just because everybody else likes it … there are plenty of "artsy" movies for you to obsess over and try to one-up each other over for whatever narrow-minded status you like in your little community. In fact, the Oscars will give those movies (i.e. the movies seven or eight of you think are works of art) their Oscars, while movies like Star Wars pay to keep Hollywood open. This is not to say that those movies are not as valid as Star Wars, or as enjoyable, but … as I said … it is completely beyond the pale that people feel like it makes them look smarter than everybody else by yanking some obscure movie out and praising it to the heavens, while blasting movies that other people might actually want to watch. I dislike a lot of movies, but it is because I dislike them … not because it is "Critic"-fashionable to do so. I mean, one of the guys that runs this site helped make Grizzley Park a reality and he generally leads the charge against Star Wars and Indiana Jones. Perhaps he should be a little more critical of his own work instead of others? I enjoyed that movie, but not as much as Star Wars. That's my two cents … like you give a shit, right?
Ya, its pretty funny and got some spot on points. But I get annoyed when they compare it to the originals and say the new ones lack the adventure, good vs evil of the originals. The theme of the prequels is completely different. We already have the plucky trilogy, why rehash it in the first place since it has to have Anakin and the republic go shit to fall in line with the originals.
LOL. Funny, and also makes a great primer on scriptwriting for movies … what NOT to do. This guy should do one for AVATAR.
Great stuff, Devin- but a link to the others would be super.
That was fucking hysterical and dead-on too.
Been following this guy since his Star Trek movie reviews. Always hilarious. He makes insanely valid points about how fucked up the structure of Phantom Menace was, which is why it was such a hollow film.
Why make this article about Simon Pegg? Why not just make it one of those Watch This Nows?
This guy should review Michael Bay flicks next.
Thank god for the web 2.0 apocalypse of twitter, or I wouldn't have already long seen this and all of Stroke Guy's other videos.
Next tweet or twaddle about lolcats and mr. t ate my balls.
Did this guy eat a fistful of quaaludes before doing the vocal track or what?
This might have been enjoyable if this guy didn't have the most dull, monotonous, stupidest voice i've ever heard. I can't believe people still make such a big deal of this movie. In fact i'd wager the fans who claim to hate it talk about it 100 times more than any one else, everyone else just got on with their lives.
pro-ta-goown-ist. classic. i thought TPM was barely ok, I dont think I've seen it twice (not completely anyways). But every criticism of this is completely spot on.
I know who this is! This is Butt-head, of Beavis & Butt-head fame, 20 years older, and still watching movies on the sofa. Since Beavis doesn't seem to be around, he gets to complain about how much stuff sucks online.
Fucking brilliance. For those confused: It's completely relevant to now and specifically the idea of a filmmaker having too much of a free hand. For example: What is Unobtanium used for and why is it so precious? (and yes, I know what a McGuffin is – but in a film full of Irvin the Explainer dialogue, why this particular lapse/mystery?) Skip to Part 7 if you require the simple wrap-up version of what the guy is talking about. But most of you confused fucks should watch it all if you actually consider yourselves fans of cinema and not just the latest piece of whizz bang FX bullshit.
I gave it 90 seconds to be funny, and it didn't succeed. Making this story about Pegg shows a real disregard for the creator, though.
"I gave it 90 seconds to be funny, and it didn't succeed."
A WHOLE 90 seconds? Please, please choke on your own vomit. Or get a vasectomy. We don't want any more of you around.
too soon!
Megan's fox hole…hee hee
This is one of the funniest things I have seen in a long time.
For lovers of TPM, you probably shouldn't watch this – it will force you to confront everything that objectively sucks about The Phantom Menace. Which is a lot. What a funny, brilliant video – thanks for bringing it to my attention.
this is awesome, great editing and voice over!
Voivodling, you are fucking unhinged, dude.
The voice was done that way to convey that even the dimmest of idiots can see what went wrong with The Phantom Menace. That's what I thought the point of it was anyway. As for it being annoying – I thought it was funny but I can see how people would get tired of it.
All seven parts are awesome!
voivodling, just watch part7.. even george lucas and his circle think the movie is an abomination.. if your not too busy taping your light saber moves in your garage..
This is the best analysis of why the movie doesn't work I've yet seen. The lack of a lead, and of any describable characters, is FAR more important than the usual 'Jar Jar's annoying' carps. Two things, though. 1) Lucas fucked up, I think, partly because he was being over-ambitious in portraying a democracy heading towards totalitarianism – but you've got to give him credit for the ambition. I do think he held it together more in Ep 2 and more again in Ep 3. And 2) I look forward to this dude telling the arrogant git Simon Pegg why introducing a character in montage is only for the weakest of script-writers. You may me mates with Tarantino, dude, but HOT FUZZ ain't no PULP FICTION.
Silly Voivodling (like the name!) … as I believe I stated in my initial post, someone else's opinion of a movie (even the creator) doesn't mean I willl or will not like it. I was simply attacking the vitriol some people (particularly "critics") use against the movie because it is the "in" thing to do in their circle. An example of this can be found above by GetOutOfMyCreepyHouse!! – "But most of you confused fucks should watch it all if you actually consider yourselves fans of cinema and not just the latest piece of whizz bang FX bullshit." To translate his elitism, you must watch movies without whizz bang FX bullshit to truly be a fan of cinema, because you are confused if you do not. Because, in his or her mind, if you have actually heard of a movie, or more than six people have seen it, then your opinion is not relevent and the movie must be garbage. Whatever happened to movies being a form of entertainment? Is there such a thing as a "pretty good" movie left, or do they all have to be Oscar winners? Light saber moves in my garage? Nah, too old for that.
so i suppose you didn't watch part7.. watch part7.. it appears you are less a fan of Star Wars and a huge fan of FX driven garbage, empty characters and pretty colors.. this was a critique made by a star wars fan and how Ep.1 totally missed the point of the star wars franchise in lieu of jamming in as much pretty FX he could think of.. you can still have characters and plot that people are committed too while in an artificial world.. it is unfortunate no one had balls to tell Lucas this.. Star Wars was always about Entertainment but equally about compelling stories and characters, all of which was lost in the prequels..
I have no desire to watch it, it is a hatchet job … plain and simple. Now you are questioning my fanhood of Star Wars (it took until Lord of the Rings for me to find a better series of movies than the original trilogy, but I am biased because I have been reading those books since I was a kid) and stating that I am just into special effects extravaganzas? Let's see, there have been at least a zillion movies with better special effects than Star Wars SINCE Star Wars … but yet those movies remained my favorites until Lord of the Rings? Makes no sense, does it? And maybe the prequels were all about "FX driven garbage, empty characters, and pretty colors" to you (again, you are attacking my intelligence from an elitist stance), but that is simply your OPINION. As I have stated numerous times over my two posts, I could give two shits about your opinion … I enjoyed the movies, I enjoyed the characters, and I enjoyed the story. Yes, in my OPINION, Episode I felt like it tried to jam in too much and stuff literally flew by … but I liked it o.k. I liked Episode II even better. Episode III is one of my favorite of the whole series (and that includes the original trilogy). My point, yet again, is that there are people like you who seem to think that your opinion speaks for all of us (and, quite frankly, some of you write for webpages) and that if we don't agree with you we are foolish or not "true" fans of movies … instead we are the stupid sheep-like masses that make stupid movies blockbusters while folks like you apparently debate the wonders of such movies as Fargo, Shakespeare In Love, and No Country For Old Men (not that there is any problem with those movies, by the way). You know, one could draw a parallel to how folks like you think you know what is best for us with the Government we have in America as well. They know what is good for me too, whether I like it or not. Anyway, best regards for the Holiday Season for you.
