I don’t usually run bullshit press releases like this, but the fact that there is a Thor movie – a major, multi-million dollar Thor movie – actually shooting right now blows my mind. And the fact that it’s directed by Kenneth Fucking Branagh blows the remnants of my previously blown mind. How did this happen? How did we go from the shitty Thor guest spot in a Hulk TV movie to a real, giant big screen version? And one that is tying in with other Marvel movies, leading to a goddamned Avengers film?
Today brought a lot of unhappy movie news, but the fact that there’s a Thor movie shooting – whether it be good or bad, it’s a Thor movie – is enough to make me think that maybe it’ll all turn out okay after all.
The press release:
Los Angeles, CA January 11, 2010 – Marvel Studios has commenced principal photography on the highly anticipated feature film THOR directed by Kenneth Branagh. In THOR, Chris Hemsworth portrays the title character with Tom Hiddleston in the role of Thor’s brother Loki, and Natalie Portman as Jane Foster. Additionally, the studio has cast Academy Award® winning actor Anthony Hopkins as Odin, Renee Russo as Frigga, Ray Stevenson as Volstagg, Tadanobu Asano as Hogun, Josh Dallas as Fandral, Jaimie Alexander as Sif, Idris Elba as Heimdall, as well as Colm Feore, Kat Dennings and award-winning actor Stellan Skarsgård. The film is slated for release in theatres domestically on May 6, 2011 via Paramount Pictures which will also release the film on a worldwide basis.
The epic adventure THOR spans the Marvel Universe from present day Earth to the realm of Asgard. At the center of the story is The Mighty Thor, a powerful but arrogant warrior whose reckless actions reignite an ancient war. Thor is cast down to Earth and forced to live among humans as punishment. Once here, Thor learns what it takes to be a true hero when the most dangerous villain of his world sends the darkest forces of Asgard to invade Earth.
The screenplay for THOR was penned by Mark Protosevich as well as Ashley Miller & Zack Stentz, and Don Payne. Marvel Studios’ President Kevin Feige will produce the film. Alan Fine, Stan Lee, David Maisel, and Marvel Studio’s Co-President, Louis D’Esposito, will executive produce.
In addition to THOR, Marvel Studios is also scheduled to release a slate of films based on the Marvel characters including IRON MAN 2 on May 7, 2010, THE FIRST AVENGER: CAPTAIN AMERICA on July 22, 2011, and THE AVENGERS on May 4, 2012.

Hey I liked Thor on Hulk! Let's hope that version doesn't end up being the better one, though (as previously happened with Daredevil, who guest starred in "The Return of the Incredible Hulk" …and was not played by Ben Affleck!).
Maybe I missed it but no mention of the villain, I'm just gonna assume Loki, but I just hope they leave out the ridiculous horns. Marvel's really gotten their shit together since the days of the original Captain America movie.
Sorry, this just sounds an awful lot like "Masters of the Universe" mixed with "Highlander 2". Sure it has a director well-known for managing theatricality reasonably well, and a decent budget one supposes, but the story sounds like the worst of all worlds.

I guess you missed Idris Elba as Heimdall in that press release? They do have a black Asgardian cast. Which of course sent approximately half the fanboys into hissy fits.

I LIKED Thor on the Hulk TV movie!! I especially liked how Donald Blake DIDN'T transform into Thor, but rather would just summon him. I hope they do something similar for the film. Or better yet, NO Donald Blake at all.

A black Heimdall is more ridiculous than the other black "re-imaginings" we have been subjected to (Kingpin, Nick Fury…) These are NORSE gods for fuck's sake. It'd be like doing an Orisha movie and having a white Chango … blacks would be up in arms.
