No surprise. It's not a traditional Kevin Smith movie. Why raise, or lower, expectations by saddling it (for lack of a better word) with "From the director of Clerks and Zack and Miri Make a Porno?"

I guess he's found his niche as a hack director of forgettable Hollywood "product."

Smith should move to television. I know there was the Clerks cartoon & the Manchild pilot, but I think a grown up Askewniverse series would be great. The man is a writer. He should write. If he could get a scripted hour-long series on HBO that was funny and had a strong emotional arch I think it would be a winner.

I agree. Smith's dialogue-heavy, visually bland style is made for the small screen.

That's not unusual with Warner Bros. at all though. Go check out the poster for The Departed. Scorsese's name is shown in exactly the same way. That's just the way they do it.

Then again Smith's name is never anywhere but the bottom of his posters.

Who are Bruce Tracey and Willis Morgan? Because the guys on the poster look a lot like Bruce Willis and some other guy waiting to be punched by Bruce Willis.

NOt surprising. I think Smith is desperate to prove he is a good director capable of making hit movies. That is why he is directing a movie he didn't write and even why Zack and Miri was different from his usual fare (at least in terms of advertising). I think Smith wants to prove himself and so this won't be advertised or promoted as a Kevin Smith movie.

It's the same reason why you never see "A Film by Kevin Smith" at the head of his movies – he rightly believes film is a collaborative medium. And if the studio doesn't wish to trade on his name to promote the movie (as the Weinstein Co. would have done), then so be it. I really hope the movie turns out to be better than the trailer suggests, and I suspect it will.

I think if Kevin Smith wants to prove himself–and he may very well want to–he should try his hand at another genre: horror, sci-fi, or even drama. We know what he's capable of and not capable of in terms of comedy. His movies–all comedies as far as I know– have a definate Kevin Smith feel. All the characters talk just like all the characters in every Smith movie…with the same interests and the same observations. I think if he wrote a horror, drama or something he might surprise himself. We know he looks into movies and what worked and what didn't. Every movie of his seems to have characters talking about other movies. And if his name isn't on the poster anyway…he could do like Mel Brooks and the Elephant Man.

How is doing an action-comedy not trying to stretch his horizons and "prove himself"? I'm a huge Smith fan, but I'll admit his movies aren't the prettiest to look at. Making an action movie forces him to improve his visual style and try something new… something more than a crane shot from the top of Mooby's. Everyone gives Smith crap for doing this movie, and while yes it's a comedy, it's far from his usual fare… both visually and story-wise. If you want a reason why he took this job, using a script he didn't write, listen to smodcast… post Zack and Miri.
