Simon Pegg has just announced via Twitter that former Dr. Who David Tennant has dropped out of the new John Landis film Burke and Hare, about the famous 19th century graverobbers. In his place: Andy Serkis.
Says Pegg’s tweet: David Tennant had to drop out of B&H but by sheer glorious serendipity a legend of Middle Earth and Skull Island has come aboard. Welcome AS
Pegg will be playing Burke and Serkis will be Hare; the duo were famous for digging up corpses from cemeteries and selling them to medical schools, but once the supply ran out they took corpse-generating into their own hands. I’m assuming with Landis and this cast we’re looking at a fairly comedic view of the proceedings, which is fine since Burke and Hare were kind of bumbling fools (or at least have been popularly portrayed as such).
John Cleese also stars. As of now the film is set for a 2010 release.

So it's I Sell The Dead with a budget?
Not sure I'd call them bumbling fools. Yes, they were caught but after a series of grisly murders. And they didn't really rob graves – they killed the poor sods themselves before they got to the grave. This may amuse: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fUk7Zo1fQ5A
I recently read a comic book about those guys. I wonder if this movie is based on the comic book?
They should just Landis supply the corpses. He's good at killing people.
weekend at Sauron's
I don't know if I've ever seen Tennant but I like Serkis a lot and I think he'll play brilliantly with Pegg.
sucks that Tennant is out. I was looking forward to Pegg and him working together
Faraci, your cutesy naming conventions for articles is completely out of control. It's almost impossible to figure out without prior knowledge what the article is about. You obviously think you're being funny in trying to hook a reader into clicking on your link, but you're really just being annoying.
Not sure what Tennant had lined up that would've been better than this. Hopefully he hasn't gotten an inflated sense of his value from reading the Internet. Or maybe he really is going to be the Riddler …
Gotta disagree completely with poster #8. The headlines are why I prefer Chud to AICN. That plus the constant stream of articles during the week.
hey #8 Elements of Style, maybe if your pop culture references reached beyond the US of A you might get the headline. This is a movie site, get over it.
Rob Graves? Never heard of him.
4: Wasn't it the second unit director that was on set the night of the TZ movie deaths? Either way, dirty pool man. I love it.
To #9, Tennant has his own television show shooting in the US now. Some lawyer comedy for one of the networks. Wouldn't surprise me if there was conflict in schedules. While that is probably bigger in regards to upside, the show's synopsis makes me think it will tank.
Burke turned King's evidence aganst Hare. Burke got to live, Hare was hanged. Then the medical community dissected Hare for the public. The doctors skinned him and made wallets and shit from Hare's skin. Sounds like a comedy.
So that's what happened to D'Angelo….
