Frosty over at Collider has just thrown up a gaggle of new photos from The Runaways, the upcoming biopic of the ’70s all-chick (these types don’t exactly strike me as girls) proto-punk band that included a young Joan Jett and Cheri Currie. Kristen Stewart and Dakota Fanning respectively are getting their retro on in those roles. Now while punk, much less proto-punk, isn’t exactly my musical bag (I’ve been rocking out to Liberace lately), Devin seems enthusiastic about it and that should be good enough for anyone.
A more official description of the film follows thus: The Runaways follows two friends, Joan Jett (Kristen Stewart) and Cherie Currie (Dakota Fanning), as they rise from rebellious Southern California kids to rock stars of the now legendary group that paved the way for future generations of girl bands. They fall under the Svengali-like influence of rock impresario Kim Fowley (Michael Shannon), who turns the group into an outrageous success and a family of misfits. With its tough-chick image and raw talent, the band quickly earns a name for itself-and so do its two leads: Joan is the band’s pure rock’ n’ roll heart, while Cherie, with her Bowie-Bardot looks, is the sex kitten.
Apparition will open The Runaways in over 1400 theaters on March 19. The music-fueled story of the ground-breaking, all girl, teenage rock band of the 1970s stars Kristen Stewart, Dakota Fanning, Danielle Riley Keough, Scout Taylor-Compton (TV’s “Arrested Development”), and Michael Shannon. The film marks the first theatrical collaboration between Apparition and River Road Entertainment. Executive Produced by Joan Jett and Produced by River Road and Linson Entertainment, The Runaways will have its world premiere at the Sundance Film Festival Sunday, January 24.

So, Michael Shannon kills everyone but Joan Jett?
Why does no one highlight the excellent doc EDGEPLAY (2004) made with the surviving members of the Runaways (notably except Jett)? It really plays up the seediness of producer Fowley and gets into the emotional damage these woman dealt with later on in life. Currie is particularly bitter, channelling her aggression into making chainsaw sculpture. Lots of archival footage, but no original Runaway tunes in the film, leading me to think Jett (and her record label) had plans for this biopic for a while. I'm looking forward to this new film, but fans of the band (and the 70's L.A. glam-rock scene) should seek out Edgeplay also.
