io9 recently had a chat with Terri Tatchell, the now Oscar-nominated co-writer of District 9, to see what she’s up to. While she noted that it’s her dream to start writing children’s novels, she’s working on a script for a film that might of interest to genre fans.
The film I’m working on now is an adaptation of a short film called Terminus. It’s a bit more science fiction, fantasy. It’s about a stone creature that follows this stressed-out guy around, just stressing him more and more. It was incredibly well received, and the director that created it, [Trevor Cawood] hasn’t done a feature yet, and he’s really talented. I approached him about writing a feature script of that. It’s been a little more challenging than I expected it to be. I’m probably on my second draft now. I’m not ready to send it off yet, but we’ll see.
Terminus is embedded below, and well worth the watch. Anyone else loving seeing so many short film directors get a major chance with a feature length version of their films?

Why is it that I BELIEVE the effects in this movie so much more than any blockbuster I've ever seen?

Wow. Just, wow. The fears of our society, that we manifest in our urban architecture, and burden us with fear and anxiety, until they cause our untimely demise. Cool, I thought it looked like Vancouver – I particularly liked the guy being followed by the luggage carousel conveyor belt. Not sure how they're going to spin this into a feature but then I ain't oscar nominated.
That's a great short film. I like that many short film makers are going feature length. I'd personally like to see a Don Hertzfeldt feature length film.
My interest in this project has been cemented. Has the potential to be a real blockbuster. This short is concrete evidence of that. Excelsior!
Glad they got a real writer to adapt this, cause even at 8 minutes, this concept was razor thin and nothing more than an effects reel. That said, short films are their own medium, and should remain as such. If an idea comes to you, and tells you it wants to be a short film, then that is what it should be. Trying to stretch it out to feature length does a disservice to both the idea and the medium of short films. I mean, you don't make a feature and then say, you know what, I want to adapt that into a short. And why doesn't that happen? Because it'd be stupid, just as it is stupid to adapt a short into a feature.
Yeah, I have zero interest in seeing this as a feature. It's just a cute CG effect, nothing that suggests a story worth watching for 90 minutes.

Yeah, seriously, whilst I'd love to see (much) more interesting and original concepts in feature films, I don't want to see short films turned into a gold mine for that.
This was cute but I can't see it as a full length feature. It was barely holding my interest at 8 minutes. Yes, the modern world is stressful and we invest too much in urban blah blah blah. It still felt pretty pointless and didn't have a whole amount of depth besides that one very thin concept. Also, was the main character trying to channel Mr Bean? Pretty over the top performance. It should stay as a short film like @animalstructure said.
