Word has come out of THR.com today that Oscar winner Penelope Cruz is in talks to join Johnny Depp in the upcoming fourth Pirates of the Caribbean film, On Stranger Tides. If this comes to be, Cruz will be re-teaming with her Nine director, Rob Marshall, who is taking over the franchise from Gore Verbinski. Plot details for Tides are still under wraps, but it’s said to involve the Fountain of Youth. Cruz’s character details are also being kept secret, though she is to be Sparrow’s foil and equal in many ways. Ted Elliot and Terry Rossio are back on writing duties.
I’m on the fence about this project. It could do fine without Orlando Bloom and Keira Knightley, but if they don’t land Geoffrey Rush, it could get very iffy. I’d want to see Rush in it as much as I would Depp. Perhaps more so. Shooting begins this summer in Hawaii for a May 20, 2011 release.

I believe I see the remnants of a Bardem love bite on the top of Penelope's boobage… And that is my only thought on this article.
I hope she doesn't get the part – terrible actress.
A bit more exciting – she's supposedly going to be in von Trier's new one. Yaaaaaay. That scientifically can not make one feel snark
I couldn't care less about Geoffrey Rush being in the fourth one. The second was probably the best of the series, and he wasn't in it. As long as it has Johnny Depp and ridiculous excess, I'll probably enjoy it.
Marshall's directing this heap? Is the kraken going to have jazz hands?
The 3rd Pirates film was an utter mess. Seriously, can anyone say they had a clue what was going on for the majority of it? It basically consisted of everyone double crossing everyone else several times over whilst we watched Depp's schtick get even more tired and Orlando Bloom once again being out-acted by the plank.
Steinmiller, you are quite the troll aren't you
Really. She's a terrible actress? Hmm, did you type that while Meagan Fox watches you back as your desktop picture? And Depp is more important than Rush, you tit. Who the hell would be like, "Depp isn't in it? Rush is, you say? FUCK YEAH, I"M IN!" This is all about Depp.
Steinmiller, you are a fucking idiot.
I have a gut feeling — that by losing Bloom and Knightley, having a stand-alone story and a script actually written BEFORE shooting — this movie might actually be *gasp* a worthy followup to the original.
@#6: That Plank has a name, Sir! And yes, she's a mediocre actress. Same with Portman (being able to squirt a tear on demand is not acting chops – neither of them have ever really broken the wall in a performance). They're not as terrible as Fox, but she has the excuse of being fucking retarded or something. Cruz has talent but spoils it with her trying-to-be-breathless-and-husky-at-the-same-time voice (I'd love to see a mash up of her against Bale's Batvoice). But her boobs make up for that particular annoyance.
I have to say right now, Penelope Cruz would actually make me consider seeing this. And I thought all 3 Pirates films were marginal (the first being the only one I'd watch again). Oh yeah, and I second the ambivalence in bringing Rush back. He was the first film's baddie, that should have been it.
"Plot details are under wraps?" Come on is that the best you can do? Try reading (or even skimming the back cover of) the Tim Powers novel on which this film is based. You'll get all the plot you need – voodoo-loving pirates searching for the Fountain of Youth so that they can become immortal and outlive the death of the pirate era.
I concur that she is often a terrible actress.
She reminds me of Beaky Buzzard from Looney Tunes.
Long as Russell Brand's in it, I'll be there!
I wonder if people complaining about Cruz's acting have ever seen her in a not-American movie. Or even Vicki Christina…
PeterD–is it confirmed that it's based on Power's book? I can remember a point where I read most of his stuff (Anubis Gate and the Drawing of the Dark stand out) and it would be about time someone mined his stories.
