Some spoilers here. Don’t read this or the source article if you’re one of the three or four Amish people who haven’t seen Avatar yet.
Syfy has some info dished by James Cameron recently regarding some possibilities for the inevitable Avatar sequel. First among these is the fact that it probably won’t be called Avatar 2. “Certainly I don’t want to call it Avatar 2,” Cameron said at the Visual Effects Society Awards
ceremony in Century City, Calif., on Sunday, where he was honored with
the Lifetime Achievement Award. “He’s not an avatar anymore, is he?
Maybe we’ll call it Na’vi.”
Cameron also mentioned that he would probably delve deeper into the Na’Vi spirituality more in the second film. “I think we can see that there’s a greater receptivity to it on the
part of the audience than certainly the studio originally imagined,”
Cameron said. “We pared back on it a fair bit in the first film, and I
think we can go farther in that direction and not alienate people.”
Finally, as for whether or not he’d direct the next film or hand it over, “I wouldn’t do that for the second film. It’d be
premature to turn it over to somebody else right now. I think I’d have
to use a film to train somebody to be able to take the reins, honestly.
That’s how I see it.”

Nice, I was thinking the same thing. 'Avatar 2' would be retarded. Unless of course other people used Avatars. 'Navi' would be a good title, then to round out the trilogy call the third one 'Pandora'. Or something. Either way, my ticket done been bought.

What? Cameron won a lifetime achievement award and Devin didn't mention it in his previous article? While perhaps not a "blank check" for the next one, I think Cameron could base it on the oral hygiene habits of the blue cat people and get a green light.

Considering the movie was about as deep and spiritual as a thimble full of piss I think Jim may be reaching a bit too far here.
just call it Pandora, the planet was by far more interesting than any story playing out on its surface..
I haven't seen it either, and clearly I am not Amish, I am using a fucking computer. I just think Cameron is an awful filmmaker and his success relies on gimmicks. Can't tell a story to save his life.
Lots of Camron haters in the comments today. You do of course realize that it had it not been for Cameron and his "gadgets" we likely would not be watching movies the same way as we do now. The man is a legend in terms of how special effects are utilized in films today. Apart from the obvious examples like 2001, Star Wars Jurassic Park and the Matrix, Cameron's films have succesflly pushed the envelope of what is possible in the digital realm. Abyss paved the way for T2 and we havent looked back ever since. In regards to an Avatar sequel, I still like the idea of having the film take place on Earth and showing what dilapidated state the planet is in, and go into the politics and the societal breakdown and what prompted Earth to look off world for its resources. The technology is there, Cameron just needs to exploit it for all it's worth.

Yeah, we'd still be watching movies that had actual plots and character development. How horrible that would be.
You knuckleheads can hate on Avatar all they like… but the fact is Cameron directed the fuck out of that movie. It was incredibly well-directed. All of Avatar's problems come down to the script. I suspect the basic, derivative scripting is largely because a film that costs north of half a billion dollars must appeal to the lowest possible common denominator. That's just reality, kids. Deal with it.
If this movie was anymore self serving they should have just called it James Cameron: The Movie. And for the record, Avatar is easily the weakest film of his. Even Titanic was better.
How about AVARICE: The Motion Picture?

@#17… Compared to TF2, Avatar is a masterpiece. The action direction is definitely part of it. Cameron just knows how to block and shoot a scene. Avatar's problems (and it's got some major problems, no doubt) are mostly script-related. @#18… actually there is a bigger douchebag group than self-proclaimed realists – people who can only use ad hominem arguments without even addressing the point being made. Awesome! No Battle Angel Alita (too hard basket it seems) but much more of all the things that were really boring about the first Avatar!
