The Captain America casting is such a back and forth business right now. This is one of the most important characters in the Marvel Universe, and while you can background Thor in The Avengers if Chris Hemsworth can’t stand toe to toe with Robert Downey Jr. But while they are recasting Iron Man as the lead of the team, Captain America must still be up front and important. With that in mind Marvel Studios is apparently taking their time with their Cap casting, and according to the very reliable Mike Fleming at Deadline, that means none of the current guys who have screen tested are getting the job.
Which means no John Krasinski.
But who is in? Now Marvel is looking at Chris Evans – who I think is the best choice yet floated. Evans has a Marvel franchise under his belt, where he was the best thing about Fantastic Four, and he’s ideal for the Star Spangled Avenger. Evans has the looks, but more importantly he has the chops and the presence. Check him out in Sunshine and tell me I’m wrong.
Evans biggest problem has been that he hasn’t had that breakout role. I think he’s going to turn a lot of heads in Scott Pilgrim vs the World, where he’s going to prove he can do comedy, but I think The First Avenger: Captain America could launch the guy to right where he deserves to be.
But Evans isn’t the only name in talks. Mike Vogel, who has been bounced around before, is still in; I think I would cast Vogel as Cap in my photo shoot about the character, but not in my movie. Also still in the running is Garrett Hedlund, star of the upcoming Tron Legacy. Hedlund balked at Marvel’s tightness with salary, but he’s apparently back at the table. I sense that Hedlund is their #1 guy, but I have my fingers crossed for Chris Evans.

Thanks for answering my question!
Headlund? The sane Garrett Headlund that weighed around 80 pounds in Four Brothers? What is Steve Buscemi not available? Puke.
Chris Evans would actually be a pretty good choice for cap. A better version of Ryan Reynolds
Here I just made the statement earlier today about Hedlund and lo and behold! I've liked this guys' work in the little bit he's done (Four Brothers, for one; Troy, not so much) and found the idea of him to be more appealing than all the others rumored.
Um, hello! Chris Evans was already in a Marvel movie!! It would be like casting Christian Bale as Superman in the next Supes movie. It's LAME to have an actor play a character in the same comic universe, especially with the crossover potentials Marvel is planning. I know none of the FF are scheduled to appear in The Avengers, but still!!!
The FF movies are over at Fox and are in no way, shape, or form associated with the Marvel Studios films other than that they both have Marvel characters. There's no continuity issues whatsoever with casting Evans, because the only way that it would ever become an issue is if the FF rights defaulted back to Marvel which
1) Fox won't let happen
2) would likely necessitate a much needed reboot of FF anyway
I love Evans but I think his charm is comical, and if they make Captain America a wiseass to fit him (like they did with Iron Man and Downey and are doubtlessly doing with Green Lantern and that jackass whose name I can't think of), then ugh.
@Gil Macias: you dont know s**t about movies, do you?
MATT DAMON!
Wait, did you say that no one that has screen tested is getting the job, yet pretty much everyone you previously reported as being in the running is STILL in the running? To say that Krasinski is out but everyone else is still in is kind of bone-headed. Is this just another reason to say you don't like Krasinski? This is a total non-story.
I can live with Evans or Hedlund. I'd even kind of be enthusiastic for either.
Chris Evans is my favorite choice so far. Dude's great in everything – and he has done comedy before, in Not Another Teen Movie, which I know is blasphemy to say I love but God dammit I love that movie.
I'm still for Captain Awesome taking the part.
Chris Evans is the best name I heard so far. I wasn't that pissed about Krasinski though.
I dont hate this choice. But Alexander Skarsgard still owns everybody.
Evans is better then a lot of the guys named before, and he's not a bad actor, but he doesn't have the presence or the look for the role. I know common perception is that all you need is blonde hair and to not be short, but that's not it at all. You need that driven spark behind the eyes, gravitas, and some amount of rugged handsomeness, and I don't think Evans has that. But if Evans isn't ideal then Hedlund is a flat out terrible fit. Come the fuck on, I wouldn't follow that guy into battle for all the money in the world, he has ZERO gravitas. It never ceases to amaze me that you get one big role in Hollywood and people keep hiring you because…well who knows? I mean look at charisma vacuum Sam Worthington. The Cap actor is someone who is going to have to stand toe to toe with Robert Downey Jr. and come out the de facto leader of his team, that probably won't be believable with Evans and it DEFINITELY won't be believable with Hedlund. Is there really no young Thomas Jane out there? As for Feracis opinion on Evans, it's biased, he's said as much in the past and he's clearly met the guy a couple of times and established some kind of rapport with him personally, so that can't really be trusted.
hey #2 did you not see Hedlund in the tron trailer? The dude is solid like a brick shithouse now.
Skarsgaard would be cool but he is pretty clearly NOT. AMERICAN.
I think I can get on board with Chris Evans as Captain American. I was feeling good about Krasinski in a so-crazy-it-might-just-work kinda way, but Evans seems like a better fit.
Evans would be an AMAZING choice. I'd already written off this film based on the bland list of actors leaked. I think Chris Evans is a wonderful movie actor in the same way Keanu Reeves is…it's almost criminal Evans can't seem to catch a break. If it has to be Captain America, more power to him. BTW, he was pretty good in Not Another Teen Movie. His timing. Hell, Johnny Storm was pretty much a comedy role. I know I sound like I'm in love with the guy, haha.
Both are better than Krasinski, but I still really don't care about this movie. Joe Johnston? Complete hack.
Dude from Chuck. Captain Awesome.
"But while they are recasting Iron Man as the lead of the team, Captain America must still be up front and important" … that quote gave me more pause than any of the Cap contenders…. Iron Man is not supposed to be the leader of the Avengers… that's Cap's job… he has to be the leader otherwise, why would S.H.I.E.L.D. defrost his ass? If Marvel is going that route, then I think they're screwing up.
Huh. You know, Evans might actually work.
This is what I know from someone high up at Marvel Studios. The script sucks balls. There is friction between a large group of stupid people who are responsible for getting this script made and some of the ridiculous choices in casting and then a smaller group trying to make a good movie, with one big gun at Marvel trying to convince everyone else to have Ed Brubaker rewrite the script, complete with gritty Bucky Assassination scenes and pulp awesomeness with a lot of saving private ryan. They are also considering Paul Walker as Cap due to his performance in Running Scared and the fact he's 6'3" and has done years of martial arts and he's also a 'name' as opposed to the rest of the people.
What about Wilson Bethel? He starred with Skaarsgard in Generation Kill and has the look.
I just figured out what is wrong with America. Well, I'm sure it was already apparent, but I just realized it because I am slow. We spend more time and thought debating who would make the bestest Captain Comic Book than we do selecting our civic leaders. I can't tell you the names of the Congressmen or all the Senators from my state, but I can tell you who is on the short list of actors to don the latest set of tights. Or maybe I'm just tired of reading the word 'gravitas' and I'm ready to kill myself. Suicide pact, anyone? McGerk, I know you're game, buddy. Also, apparently Robert Downey Jr should only do one man shows now, because his charisma and gravitas is such that it sucks the meat from all other actors and leaves a pile of upstaged bones.
Sunshine rocks. Glad to see it finally getting some love.
Chris Evans is like a marginally upgraded Stiffler; sure, he has charisma, but it's the kind that gets drunk chicks to blow you, not the sort that inspires soldiers to battlefield heroics, and certainly not the sort that let him go verbally toe to toe with some of the great madmen of the 20th (and now 21st) century.
It'd be easier to believe Jim Halpert with CGI muscles.
I've thought Evans would be a great Cap since seeing Sunshine, so I'd be totally down with his getting the role.
Yeah, Sunshine is the tits, but in the final third it turns into a bullshit slasher film. As for Evans, yeah he's great in it. Not sure I'd buy him as Cap. I'm still holding out for Matt Keeslar from The Middleman.
I hope Iron Man doesn't end up leading the team, Cap should as he always has.
"Yeah, Sunshine is tits"… fixed that for ya.
Chris Evans is a total faggot and will destroy captain americas image in the eyes of all
