Every now and again I get a chance to head over to the G4 studios and humiliate myself live on TV during Attack of the Show. This latest appearance saw me paired with USA Today’s Scott Bowles, who joined me to talk about some of this summer’s upcoming movies.
It looks like a weak summer to me, but the folks at Attack of the Show did choose some of the rare highlights to discuss, including Iron Man 2, Scott Pilgrim, The Last Airbender and Inception.

If Inception isn't the best film of the summer, let alone the year, I'll be surprised. Nolan's got the best track record of the lot. I will agree I'm super-excited about Scott Pilgrim. New Nolan AND Wright films to look forward to? That's not a weak summer at all.
Well Inception should be great, but it will not be better than Tree of Life, but it will be up there at the end of the year…
I was on the fence about Scott Pilgrim until I heard "KO" in the trailer, now I'm fucking sold. It's got my vote too.
I saw Kick Ass with a rowdy audience that ate up every trailer (except one) that ran before the film. Even the trailer for that dreadful looking Ashton Kutcher/Katherine Heigl flick garnered laughs. The one that got zero reaction from a theater full of fanboys and the easily amused: Scott Pilgrim. I have a gut feeling this is going to be the next comic movie that only appeals to the sensibilities of a select few and gets championed to death by the internet fanboy community only to get roundly ignored by the general public.
Now THAT is Cool News!
I'm concerned that Scott Pilgrim won't translate well to film. But I also think Kick-Ass and Watchmen didn't translate all that well either.
I feel that when film-makers are too tied to the comic book page the screen suffers. That doesn't mean you can't adapt things from comics to film. It just means they need leeway to adapt appropriately. Nolan's Batman, Singer's X-Men and Raimi's Spiderman are probably best adaptations to date. And what makes them great, IMHO, is that they managed to re-invent the characters and stories.
Pilgrim is an absolutely amazing comic (or manga or graphic novel or whatever you want to call it). And Wright is a pretty good director too. But the previews seem really focused on the "7 evil exes." Which is fair, since it's central to the plot of the comics. But, in the comics the fights actually take kind of a back seat to the rest of world O'Malley creates. It's the web of characters that makes Scott Pilgrim so amazing. I'm just worried that cramming all of those epic, big screen, summer blockbuster fights into a single feature length film will leave far too much of Scott Pilgrim's awesomeness off-screen.
I hope I'm wrong though.
…Why would you go on G4?
No one's talking about Night's Avatar because nobody gives two craps about it. Night is secondary. And look at Devin deluding himself about the public's absolute disregard for Kick-Ass. Can't wait for Pilgrim to share the same fate.
I miss the days when boxoffice numbers weren't what a movie was judged on… I could care less if Kick Ass, Inception, or Scott Pilgrim make a ton of money… I'm just happy they were made, and that I get to enjoy them… wil boxoffice numbers decide if a sequel is coming, sure, but it's such an AMerican way to be worried about getting more… then just enjoying what we have…
SCOTT PILGRIM!!!
Awesome. Stay classy, Devin.
Chris Nolan has yet to make a movie that is entertaining. Fuck a "thinking mans" blockbuster. I'll take Scott Pilgrim or Iron Man 2 over his bullshit any day.
@ #12… I tae it you don't consider yourself a thinking man? Good for you, champ.
Oohphah, No offense Devin but you got a face and body perfect for internet reporter. TV not so much. Also if it were not for Simon Pegg no one would give a shit about the hipster tripe that is Scott Pilgram no matter how hard you try force feeding it to us.
Jesus, is it really that big a deal if people didn't like KICK ASS to the point where Devin has to justify it on a show like that???? We didn't like it.. Get over it already.. And neither one of them picking Ironman 2 as the summer winner is absurd and there picks made it fairly obvious..
@9 You wanna give a shit about box office, buddy, cos it's box office that dictates what kinda movies we'll be watching one year, two years and three years from now. Greenlights hang on the success of similar films. When good films do well and shit ones fail, it's worth cheering. When it's vice versa, it's weeping time.
