Lost Planet and Dead Rising are truly the red-headed stepchildren in Capcom’s franchise stable. They sold a ton of copies, sure, but I’ve yet to meet anyone in the flesh who truly enjoyed those games except in theory. The difference, however, is that from all available evidence, Dead Rising 2 seems to be getting its shit together, showing some genuine lessons learned. Lost Planet, on the other hand, seems to have gotten a facelift, but not any smarter, or deeper. Actually I take back the red-headed stepchild thing. They’re more like Janet and Latoya Jackson than anything.

As opposed to the yearly bum for change Tony Hawk’s franchise has become, the Skate franchise has been built up slowly, deliberately, with a lot of tender loving care, to become something that consistently delivers an enjoyable, accessible experience. That said, the name of the game this time is co-op, with a much bigger focus on team gameplay on- and offline. Which all well and good, considering every addition Skate 2 added to the mix was for the best, but I don’t think it’s unwise to keep ones fingers crossed the single player keeps the same level of polish.

As much as I’d love to sell this as Lego Legend of Zelda, I feel like I would get an angry, profanity/hatred/spittle laden diatribe courtesy of From Software. Then again, this is the company that made the biggest spiky boot up the ass of the common, modern gamer in the form of Demon’s Souls, so I guess they’ve already shown how much they hate me. This game, on the other hand, is all about the love. It is a giant love letter to the original Legend of Zelda, to 8-bit gaming, to the era that gave modern gaming a foundation, and from all reports, an amazingly well crafted adventure game in its own right.

So, we’re finally getting the Rocket Knight Adventures sequel that should have happened in 1996. I’ve been begging for this game for over a decade. And between the loss of the fantastic steampunk that drove the original games, the Banjo-Kazooie level graphics, and just the completely uninspired nature of the trailers, frankly Sparkster, I don’t give a damn.

Render unto Priest that which is Priest’s. One can dislike the band’s music as a total product all they want, but if there is a Metal Bible, British Steel is the first book of the New Testament. Rock Band has done the Priest tracks so far the favor of really making it easy to appreciate how intricate and amazing the craft on those albums was. Whether that shines through on these live recordings remains to be seen, though.

For pure glorious noise, you won’t find a better choice among this week’s releases. Granted, it’s perverse of White to front a band with his earnest-if-eccentric vocals vocals more than with his his guitar, but he joins in with Alison Mosshart and Dean Fertita with some nicely layered work. I particularly love the James Jamerson-style bassline that anchors “Hustle and Cuss,” the sass that Mosshart brings to “The Difference Between Us,” the funky organ groove on “Gasoline,” and every gritty second of “I Can’t Hear You.” I leave you to find your own favorites.

Mortality’s long been a favorite topic for rock musicians, but maturity, and its price, are a tougher call, and it tends, at its best, to be the province of your rootsier plain-spoken souls like Dave Alvin or John Hiatt. Matt Berninger takes what might be indie rock’s best stab at it yet, and emerges as

Browne bores the shit out of me, but Lindley’s a hell of a player, and on his own can be one of rock’s genuinely fascinating madmen. He’s also been Browne’s sideman for… well, for a helluva long time, and I was hoping that his co-billing on this live set might mean that he’d leaven Browne’s earnest tedium with off-the-wallisms like “El Rayo-X” or the raunch of “Mercury Blues.” Well, both songs are here, but presented in tame, tasteful versions that have almost none of the energy of Lindley’s originals. Elsewhere, it’s mostly Browne sensitively strumming and murmuring his way through his catalog with Lindley gamely tossing precisely-executed guitar and fiddle licks to complement the boss’ caramel vocals. Go back to sleep, fellas.

The unreleased and live stuff that has emerged since their near-perfect first (and only) album tends to make me wonder if that perfection wasn’t as much a stroke of luck as of genius, but that time has passed, so we’ll never know. The 95 tracks on 4 disks here include more than twice as many alternate versions as there are songs on the original album, plus the singles and b-sides that have been collected before, as well as two full CD’s of live stuff. Most of the alternate mixes and live recordings haven’t been released before… but they sound pretty much like the ones that have been. My guess is that anyone who feels like dropping fifty bucks on this band probably has the rarities included here already, but if you REALLY can’t get enough of The La’s (“I Can’t Sleep” alone appears seven times in the set), it’s the way to go.
Stereophonics, Keep Calm and Carry On. Yeah, we’re a little behind the curve here in the States, just getting this now. “Stuck In A Rut” is an unfortunate song title, particularly when the track is closer to Bon Jovi than anyone would regard as prudent. But about half of it rocks pretty well, which is more than, say, Oasis is going to deliver this year.
Hoodoo Gurus, Purity of Essence. They left the garage behind a while ago, and there’s a whiff of indie solemnity on stuff like “Are You Sleeping?”, but most of the album’s pretty tough and, naturally, hooky as all hell.
Jon Lord, To Notice Such Things. Well, here’s something I noticed: Deep Purple’s organist has composed an orchestral piece in honor of the late John Mortimer, creator of Rumpole of the Bailey. Haven’t heard it yet myself, but David Coverdale says it’s “sensitive accompanying music to enhance your mornings, afternoons & evenings.” So there.
Meat Loaf, Hang Cool Teddy Bear. No. Just… No.
Keane, Night Train. So, wait– these are the piano guys, right? It’s not impossible to play rock n roll on the piano, but for every Jerry Lee Lewis you get about ten Billy Joels. And with three of them in this band, I’d say the odds are not in our favor.
As I Lay Dying, The Powerless Rise. Death and plague and suffering and anger and… apathy. I know which one I choose.
We Are The Fallen, Tear The World Down. You’re kidding- two members of Evanescene and an American Idol loser? Young people of today, Universal Music is fucking with you…
Elizabeth Cook, Welder. Remember the chick in Flashdance? Wasn’t she a welder, too? I don’t recall her being as confused as this young woman seems to be… or as chirpy.
Taproot, Plead the Fifth. The press release for this album reads “Plead The Fifth combines all of the elements that their fans have come to expect from the band.” That is one lazy motherfucker of a press agent.

Daria: The Complete Animated Series comes to DVD with relatively few music changes. Plus, the episodes are uncut which is a far cry from its Beavis and Butthead ancestors. There’s ton of vintage MTV footage with Daria, Jane and the whole gang. Back when MTV still had quality animation and showed those music video things. The only downside I’ve noticed from advance viewings is that the commerical bumper music seems to cut back into the start of new acts in the show. It seems like the timing’s off by a few seconds, but it’s nothing major.

Daybreakers has such a great concept with no real execution. I’m not going to praise the Spierig brothers, but I’m going to call it as I see it. They are two Australian gentlemen that show the ability to take genre material and repurpose it for the masses. The sad thing is that the end-result is often very mediocre and doesn’t illicit the response that comes from films with tighter scripting, editing and other key essentials. Still, it’s a fun movie.

Legion is a litmus movie. It’s fun crap to watch on an off-week like this. Plus, it never takes itself too seriously. The film’s true purpose is to be used to find the idiot in your circle of friends. I’m not sure how many of you have experience this, but there’s always one person in your common group of friends who might be borderline retarded. Throw on any dumb movie, but I’d recommend picking a FX heavy film. Put out some snacks and a comfortable chair, then tape them. Sometimes, I transcribe what they say during the film and I try to piece together a review out of that.

The Karate Kid is a film that you should already understand. Will Smith’s hatchling is going to star in a reimagining of the film with Jackie Chan. Sony decided to pull a corporate synergy hadouken and release the original film on Blu-Ray. Sure, they also released the second film…but, I’m going to ignore that. This is the film that introduced America to the glory of William Zabka. Growing up as a blonde child, I always idolized Zabka’s ability to beat up on Italian kids from New Jersey. That’s what those punks get for moving to Surf City and hanging out at the wrong high school. Unfortunately, the power of Elizabeth Shue’s rockin’ tits pushed Daniel-san into learning Karate. If this were reality, the Cobra Kai squad would’ve fucking murdered Daniel in the ring. Well, that would be after Mr. Miyagi molested him in his creepy basement apartment. I love the cinema of the mind.
