EXCELLENT! To be fair to him, Stallone didn't do a bad job, nor did Danny Cannon as a director in the original – the studio recut that movie to shreds, eliminating whole sequences and making it worse than it should've been. Stallone would not have been the best choice for the role then, for sure – that said, since Rocky Balboa and Rambo he'd actually be a much better choice than many others. I digress. This is great news – not so sure about the 3D thing, but any new Dredd movie has my vote. Have read 200AD since prog 1, I am that old yes. Dredd is one of the greatest characters in science fiction, done right this will be awesome. What would be amazing would be if they get it right and get a sequel – set up the world, give a hint of what's to come and in a sequel give us the Dark Judges. No playing for laughs, serious scifi horror take on it and it'd be superb. Mark Strong or Tim Olyphant for Dredd – or better yet, Clancy Brown (the way it should've been back then).

The 3D news has me worried because it makes me think they're going for a PG-13. If that's the case, I'll stick with with the original, Schneider and all. Also, Pete Travis makes shit movies.

Dredd is arguably the greatest comic book character to have ever come out of Britain. The earlier film was appalling in its almost complete lack of understanding of what made the character of Dredd and I can only hope that having so many Brits onboard they will keep the black humour which makes JD so special.

Comment #11—I think that's some production art from last year, as I remember it being posted all over the place at the time. Comment #12—I didn't get into the Dredd comics until years later, and after re-visiting the film, I was really frustrated with how much they got RIGHT. I mean, someone had at least read the earlier stuff, and it seemed to draw quite a bit from the comics, but they totally botched the character and the tone of the material. It's almost like it would have been a more acceptable movie if the script had shown a complete ignorance of the book, but instead it looks like someone did do their homework, but none of it really showed.

The original Robocop started life as a Judge Dredd script and that's exactly the tone they should go for.

the Bad Dredd came from that age when producers used to brag that they were not interested in source material if said source material was from comics and were "re-imagining' the character. Dredd works because his slavish, literal devotion to the letter of the law actually comes not from irony or angst but naiveté, and in the universe he inhabits (where the government charges you for a monthly oxygen bill and there are-uh… ..dinosaurs). It only works if the world is so completely ridiculous that Dredd seems normal.

The early Dredd comics that were written in the late 70's almost seem like an homage to Silver Age stories from the 60's that feel like satires that are written today of the ridiculous ultraviolent stuff from the 80's and 90's…if that makes any sense. It seemed very ahead of it's time, and very Robocop, as someone else mentioned. That said, a Dredd/Robocop crossover (they're both at Dynamite now in the U.S., though Dredd has yet to be re-launched) written by Garth Ennis would be amazing.

I'm a 2000AD reader from the beginning, no small feat being in USA and getting weekly issues of a British comic, and Dredd is without a doubt my favorite illustrated fiction character. I liked the movie, wish they'd kept his helmet on, hated that they turned the comic character of Fergie from a kinda retarded hero into comic sidekick, loved that fly over of the city when Fergie reports to his assigned block flat, Mean Machine was awesome but would've liked him to be a bit more dumb and funny and wild. I agree they should bring Judge Death and the other 3 dead judges into a movie, high excitement and horror factor, introduce PSIJudge Anderson…so many rich characters… please folks, don't mess this up again!
