Well, finally, here ’tis. I’ve seen people adore this album, others dismiss it as perfect shit (and it’s not even out yet). Me, I like it well enough as a concept: Alexis Krauss’ sugary vocals laid over dirty noise guitar and borrowed beats, with what could be almost mistaken for genuine teen experience (“wonder what your boyfriend thinks about your braces?“). Plus a lot of doorbell chimes. It does go on a bit, though, and if there’s anything to be learned from any of the songs, that’s dispensed with in the first thirty seconds or so, leaving you to ponder whether borrowing beats is really as interesting as is used to be. Loud, though, I’ll give it that.

“I’m too tired to try.” Talk about blowing your cover. I can’t come down too hard on the guy, since I actually liked the film Thicker Than Water, and anyone who learned to play guitar by alternating Cat Stevens with Metallica gets slack from me. But when he goes all Michael Franks, it can get pretty cloying: I’ll agree he’s never written anything as appalling as “Popsicle Toes,” but “My Little Girl” is at least in the same area code. Elsewhere, he manages something that might be mistaken for bluesy (“Red Wine, Mistake, Mythology”), rocks ever so tastefullly on “At Or With Me” and throughout keeps his guitar playing just interesting enough that you don’t quite give up on him. But you won’t remember a single lick afterwards, if that matters.

The Modfather continues to be massive in England, virtually forgotten here in the States. Things might be different this time, since there’s a hook to hang a story on: a mini-Jam reunion! Of course, it’s just two tracks, and it’s only him and Bruce Foxton, but still: while Americans tend to lump The Style Council in with hordes of anonymous one-hit 80’s fashion bands, they equate The Jam with the legendary days of punk rebellion which are so hotly nostalgic today (I love The Jam, but they were as calculated a piece of marketing as London produced in the late 70’s– Weller was still living with his parents in those days for god’s sake), which might make for better copy. Anyway, it’s the usual mixture of soul-inflected rock and the occasional stab at Scott Walker/Brian Wilson “genius.” If you liked 22 Dreams, no reason to think you won’t like this. If you didn’t even know Weller was still around… then… um…

Maybe I’m biased because this album was recorded the same week I saw Iggy at San Francisco’s Old Waldorf, but this is easily the most exciting post-Stooges band he ever assembled: Brian James from The Damned, Glen Matlock (the Sex Pistols’ actual bassist) and Ivan Kral (from the Patti Smith Group). Given that he was promoting the Solider album, the song selection is pretty good, including obvious choices like “I Wanna Be Your Dog” and “No Fun”, the rarely-heard “Your Pretty Face Is Going To Hell” and the otherwise unavailable “Hitchhiking in California.” The sound? Somewhere between Metallic K.O. and TV Eye, but fuck that: you need this album. Period. Buy the download version, though, because fuck that stupid “deluxe packaging,” too.

Molly Hatchet, Justice. Frank Frazetta’s gone, but these guys carry on. And they call that justice?
Cherryholmes, Cherryholmes IV Common Threads. The last band I can recall titling their albums with roman numerals was Chicago, and we all know how that turned out.

Futureheads, Chaos. I dunno… this might have sounded chaotic about twenty years ago. Now it sounds like formulaic post-punk: not great, not bad.

Right idea, wrong studio. Oh, what Bioware would’ve done for this concept. Unfortunately, we’ll never know, as the poor, insufferable bastards behind KOTOR II developed this one, which means we can probably expect wonderfully well-written dialogue and plot, decent production values, and a list of klutzy design decisions that could line I-95 from Portland to Orlando, and still have enough to use as toilet paper every time you stop at Waffle House.

Awesome, more overpriced maps that will bring XBox Live crashing to the ground while every 13 year old in the country tries to download it all at once. Sorry, that’s probably unfair. I’m probably bitter because I tend to loathe when the balance of any game series I love starts to shift in favor of the multiplayer, and don’t understand why the Valve model (create an awesome multiplayer experience that doesn’t completely abandon storytelling and character) hasn’t become standard, but mostly, I’m pretty sure I just fucking hate teenagers.

Alice in Wonderland was this weird beast that Tim Burton and Disney shat into existence. Taking a cue from the Frank Beddor style adventures, Burton sought to recreate a classic tale for the Hot Topic set. Naturally, Disney realized that they needed to make something that could appeal beyond the Goth kids. So, they brought in some top-notch British supporting talent. The result was the continued sense of Burton players struggling through material that seems slightly beyond Burton’s grasp. Matt Lucas as the Tweedles was fun. It was like seeing Daffyd’s two retarded cousins from Wales.

Aqua Teen Hunger Force continues to prove that massive amounts of weed dictates what college kids watch at night. This is the first Adult Swim to hit 100 episodes and I can’t say that too much has change. The movie still serves as this great fuck you to those that tried to start with the show via their solo celluloid adventure. But, the episodes are still these little cuts of odd. The live-action episode took place during this sort-of season and it introduced the world to Dave Long. If your sole credit in life is looking like Carl, I fucking pity you. While it makes you truly badass, you look like Carl. Carl, dude.

The Wolfman continues to prove that CG effects are ruining American cinema. Sure, filmmakers will keep on their spiel about it just being a tool of the trade. We are moving forward technically and effects are improving. But, you can’t get past a studio that obviously had no idea what the fuck they wanted to achieve. All of Rick Baker’s work seems for nothing, when you have CG Wolfman and Old Man Wolf hopping around. Then, there’s the fact that the movie was pretty boring. For all of the noise over Mark Romanek walking and the musical score changes, there’s nothing to show for the effort. It’s just a cash grab from a studio that needs its classic properties to float SNL comedies that didn’t suck.

Life was a great nature documentary. That is if you watched it on the BBC. Discovery Channel chose to re-edit some of the material and slam on some new narration from Oprah Winfrey. Here’s the problem with that creative endeavor. Oprah Winfrey is a terrible narrator. She’s not the worse narrator ever, but she has a voice that can be only described as a 9th grade ESL student desperately trying to recite the Gettysburg Address. Queen Latifah had similar trouble narrating Arctic Tale, but her problem started with not relating the emotion of what was onscreen. Oprah understands that she has to pull the viewers into the action, but she finds this weird way of performing such actions. I’d go so far as to say that she turns into Brian Fellows. That’s why I recommend the BBC Blu-Ray release. David Attenborough is a scholarly narrator that bothers to inform, educate and entertain.
