Craig Brewer’s remake of Footloose has finished casting and the only guy in the movie you’ve heard of is Dennis Quaid, who will be playing the John Lithgow patrician role. You know, the guy who hates dancing. The rest of the cast is unknowns or up and comers, as it probably should be.
The new Kevin Bacon is a kid named Kenny Wormald, a professional dancer whose scant acting credits include a starring role in the DTV Center Stage 2: Turn It Up (I honestly did not know there was a Center Stage sequel!). His moves will be choreographed by Jamal Sims, who worked with Madonna and is doing the choreography for Neil Patrick Harris’ upcoming version of Rent (which I am dying to see).
I like Quaid as the baddie here and I think it tells us something about where Brewer is going. Lithgow, no matter what, has a level of goofiness to him. That’s part of his appeal. But while Quaid is charming and fun, he can really be threatening when he wants to be, and there’s little silliness evident in him when he’s doing seriously stern. This could be a more serious Footloose, which is kind of what I have been guessing since Brewer was announced to direct (and to rewrite the script).
The new Footloose hits theaters April 1, 2011.

I dunno, I thought Lithgow was pretty menacing in the original. Bacon himself can be intense as fuck and would have been a cool choice as well.
#1, agreed. Also, see Raising Cane and the latest season of Dexter… Even Cliffhanger and Ricochet. Bad-guy Lithgow farking rules.
This sounds so bad. Quaid has been in crap movies lately. His presence alone is a bad omen for this movie.
Bacon would have been a nice touch as Mr Anti-Dance.
Julianne Hough is the biggest reason to see this. That girl is fiiiiiiine.
Devin, you may be surprised at some of the movies that have direct to DVD sequels. I haven't seen any of these, but all you have to do is walk through a Blockbuster as it seems most of their selection is direct to DVD stuff now. For instance did you know Kevin Sorbo made 2(!) sequels to The Rock's version of Walking Tall? Dukes of Hazzard had a prequel. The Cell 2 exists. You may know of the 2 Starship Troopers sequels. Ace Ventura, Jr should never be watched by human eyes; I have permanent damage just from the trailer. There are countless others that the Chewers may know of, but I just thought I'd pointlessly point out that Center Stage isn't the only one with direct to DVD sequels.
No tractor game of chicken = No ticket!
Lithgow was goofy because Footloose was and always will be a silly idea for a movie. Quaid won't help "serious" it either. Why bother?
