Scotland might have considered a different type of animation (for example, the kind that can be done with pencils and paper, or the kind that can be done with clay or creepy little dolls) if they can't afford the resources necessary to do good-looking computer animation. There are lots of ways to produce animation, but few look as much like shit when half-assed as computer graphics do.

Scotland also might have considered waiting to produce an animated movie until they had an actual story.

I think the storyline looks even worse than the animation. So there's a beaver that needs saving and some old guy and his pals will spend a whole movie trying to do that, whilst an evil cop talks on the phone and a goat does something wacky? THAT's the story? WTF? Can you imagine kids getting excited by that, because I sure can't.

Poor bastards. It's just awful. Those cloud backgrounds are straight from my nightmares and everything looks grubby and unappealing, like an unwashed sporran.

Animation aside, is the lead to this movie really a "hip" Grandpa that rides a skateboard? They might as well have Poochie from The Simpsons be the main character. That would actually make more sense, considering this is a movie filled with clothes wearing, talking animals.

I hope this doesn't mean Connery is trying to go out like Orson Welles

I worked in Scotland as an animator for a while (There are a couple of small studios that do good short form work, honest to God!) & the company that made this movie was notorious in Scotland's tiny animation community for not having a clue what it was doing.

Finally we'll have a film to fill out a double feature with Delgo.

Yeah, wow. This is a Wii game all the way. One of those crap games not made by Nintendo that no one buys but still keep coming out. But it is nice to know that if you are Scottish you can get Connery to come out of retirement to be in your crap CG film. And no, you can't blame crap on them being in Scotland. There are video game companies in Scotland that have made games better than this.

The thing about this isn't even that the animation is bad (which it is) because yeah, that's sorta like ragging on a smaller budget indie film not having great special effects. It's that the story itself looks so abysmally by the numbers. Even the acting is awful; I'd say Connery was phoning it in, but that'd imply that he was awake at some point during the proceedings.

To be fair though, Sylvain Chomet's (Belleville Rendezvouz) new film 'The Illusionist' was animated in Edinburgh and that looks beautiful. Definitely worth a look as it is premiering at the Edinburgh Festival soon. We don't all produce crap!

I can't defend Connery all the way (especially after LXG), but I read somewhere that he did this as a 'small project' in aid of charity-related work to raise awareness of one of his charities or something… so he gets off the hook a tad, however the animators DO NOT!!

It's a sad day when a whole country gets a bad rep for one company's shitty efforts.

Here are just a couple of GREAT things coming out of Scottish Animation:

– The Illusionist is Scotland's first feature length animation. And it is fantastic!

-Axis Animation are an awesome studio based in Glasgow, doing first class videogame cinematics and commercials for over 10 years. Check out Codehunters and Killzone 2 for a start.

As someone who works for an animation studio in the same city as these people, I'd like to point out that

(a) This is one studio in the whole of Scotland, not the WHOLE Scottish Animation Industry… some Scottish studios actually produce awesome work

and

(b) Sylvain Chomet's The Illusionist was the first full length animated feature made in Scotland and it, too, is awesome.

See thats just pathetic. I watched the whole thing and it's wrong on so many levels. the story is crap as it's explained. the dialogue is crap. the animation is crap, the cgi itself is crap. the narrative for the trailer is crap. the trailer is edited for crap…. it's soup-to-nuts a half assed effort. I have to wonder if Connery actually SAW any of this and was just pitched a hypothetical "movie" early on and signed up to try and help his fellow Scottsman get a leg up in the world… Sadly, with the right artists even with limited budget, skill, and equiptment, you can pull off a lot of great stuff if you know where to cut corners and choose a visual style that looks solid but requires less detail and cgi power. Most Anime, hand drawn, runs at half the FPS of american and even old-school disney work. I've seen indie geeks at home making 3d cgi movies on their pc stronger then this because of better use of shadows, framing, and style. Heck even black and white endeavors like 'Renaissance' felt WAY better then this… I guess it's their own funeral. This ought to bankrupt them.
