Del Toro Set to Write and Produce* Film for Disney

Toro surprised the 6,500 fans gathered today at Comic-Con with the
announcement that he is currently developing a new film for The Walt
Disney Studios based on the classic Disney theme park attraction, The
Haunted Mansion.“Dark imagery is an integral part of the Walt Disney legacy. After
all, Disney himself was the father of some really chilling moments and
characters – think Chernabog from Fantasia or Maleficent as the Dragon
or the Evil Queen in Snow White,” said del Toro. “I couldn’t be more
excited to be a part of my own adaptation of the original theme
park attraction Walt envisioned and that remains- for me- the most
desirable piece of real estate in the whole world!”“Millions of people from around the world visit The Haunted
Mansion each year, but no one has ever had a tour guide like Guillermo
del Toro,” said Rich Ross, Chairman of The Walt Disney Studios.
“Guillermo is one of the most gifted and innovative filmmakers working
today and he is going to take audiences on a visually-thrilling journey
like they’ve never experienced before.”Since August 1969, foolish mortals have dared to trespass on the
macabre grounds of Disney’s Haunted Mansion. A hallowed landmark in
Disneyland’s New Orleans square, it’s the dwelling place of 999 happy
haunts dying to meet new visitors each day. The plantation-style of the
mansion’s facade is a sweet deception for visitors. Inside, ghostly doom
buggies line the hallways. Since its construction, the mysteries of the
mansion have transcended the attraction with stories surfacing about
horrifying encounters with the supernatural. Versions of the daunting
edifice have been built at other Disney theme parks in Orlando, Tokyo
and Paris.

Of all the things Guillermo could be spending his time on, this has got to be the least interesting option of them all. I want DROOD and MOUNTAINS OF MADNESS! Now! No one else is ever gonna do that shit right! (Also SATURN AND THE END OF DAYS sounds really interesting.)
He left the Hobbit for this?

Blah. Couldn't really care less. I'd definitely prefer GDT focus "At The Mountains of Madness" or "Hellboy 3". That's my personal preference.
What the SHIT? He leaves The Hobbit to write and produce The Haunted Mansion? This is horrible news. He has so many projects that would benefit from his creative style, even though I honestly am not a huge fan of most of his work. I still love The Devil's Backbone dearly, and that gives me hope he'll eventually crank out something along the same lines.
What a waste. Guillermo's most talented at amassing projects.

Hollywood's really pushing the "Auteur Producer" concept lately. Are there so few visually creative directors out there? What's causing the log-jam?
So they're rebooting a movie in less than a decade. Wow, that's creative. Will Murphy make a cameo as a zombie symbolizing his career?
As a writer he's a great director. This seems pointless and Disney's got it's work cut out for it trying to get everyone to forget about the last version of this movie.
I am not happy about this. This isnt Tim Burton we're talking about who jumped the shark years ago. This is GDT who has more talent in his sausage shaped pinky than Tim Burton does in his entire body. SIGH I just hope for continuity's sake they bring back the comedic talent of Eddie Murphy.

Hm, I may be the only one psyched about this. There's actually a rich history to the attraction, and there's even a complex crossover between the worlds of Pirates and the Mansion. (one of the pirates naded in New Orleans and met his fate and the hands of the Mansion's widow or something). Eddie Murphy's version was a colossal waste of a cool gothic property.I look forward to GDT's vision.
holy crap you people are negative. haunted mansion is right up del toro's alley… I'm pretty sure he will make it something wonderful.

It's not really a bad idea for him to write and produce this. He does this and it makes good money then that's more money/kudos that can go towards the films that he really wants to make. It's just the old one for them/one for me act happening and that's ok by me.
