Empire recently talked to Timur Bekmambetov about the dozen or so projects he currently has up his sleeve- from Wanted 2 to his 3D film about drunk driving Red Asphalt to his remake of Black Lightning – and he revealed he’s getting ready to direct Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter.
“That one I’m prepping to direct myself. It is not a comedy at all – it is a very entertaining, epic history lesson for millions and millions of teenagers. If you remember Nightwatch, it is maybe in the vein of that kind of movie.”
(If the title of the film seems familiar, it’s because it’s based on a novel by Seth Grahame-Smith, the best-selling author of Pride and Prejudice and Zombies.)
“We are keeping the traditional look of Lincoln – the big hat and the beard. He has to be historically correct, but with a few special weapons. There is only one book, but there will be many opportunities to develop and explore this world if we get to do sequels. I hope we will start this winter. We are shooting in America.”
One can only hope that it achieves the lofty heights of Jesus Christ: Vampire Hunter.
The director did talk to Empire about finishing up his Night Watch trilogy, and it doesn’t sound promising. “I hope it happens. It’s like first love – we created this world and now I’m watching the Twilight movies, I feel like we missed something by not doing Twilight Watch. Because there are a lot of ideas in those films that we were going to use. But we didn’t finish the story. It would be good to get around to it one day. “
Ah well. Whatever the director picks, it will be nice to see his nutty visual style up on the big screen again.

He should grab Liam Neeson. That'd be a nice fuck you to Spielberg.
Ha! I am psyched for this, the book was excellent. And I doubt it could reach the heights of Jesus Christ Vampire Hunter, that was epic, canadian, and had a guy killed with drumstixx.. nothing will ever beat that movie or the killer music…
What a turd. Back when he was making Wanted, he said he wasn't going to do a Dusk Watch because everything he would have wanted to see done with that movie, he was currently doing with Wanted. Which didn't make much sense, but whatever.
"…there are a lot of ideas in those films that we were going to use…" Jesus, and people hold this guy in high regard?..
wasn't there an episode of Party Down where they talk about making a movie from a comic book about Edgar Allan Poe and Abe Lincoln fighting vampires?
Honest Abe has to b ekris Kristofferson! It has to be!
The guy is a hack when it comes to communicating narrative. Before Bekmambetov had directed any English speaking movies, my Russian ex-girlfriend even confirmed to me that what I was seeing as shitty story telling had nothing to do with any sort of language barrier. This was totally confirmed with "Wanted." Not only did he strip-mine a great story and turn it into shit, he created a barely cogent pile of muck where a movie should have been. I readily admit that his visual style is immensely unique and often beautiful. That doesn't mean he should direct movies though. I think that someone like this needs to be put in director jail and knocked back to Director of Photography — leaving someone with some sense of storytelling to helm. I have no confidence that anything that Bekmambetov does will be anything shy of disjointed chaotic skat.
What ever happened to the Mody Dick adaptation he was doing? That evaporate too?
