This was waiting for me in today’s mail alongside a screener of Survival of the Dead:
I may be a bonehead and an unappreciative swag recipient but I was a little put off when this head item attacked my sight from inside the box it shambled into my house from. Survival of the Dead is the latest underbudgeted George Romero zombie movie, somewhat hot on the heels of the not good Diary of the Dead (which was hot on the heels of the quite good Land of the Dead). Even though I know that the funding for movies often comes from a different place than the funding for marketing, I just kind of scratched my head about the whole thing.
It bothers me to see expensive swag paired with movies that could have used more money where it matters.
This is theoretical of course. It was just odd. Like seeing a funky sorta cool homeless dude wearing a Polo shirt.

My boss at my theater still wears a promotional "Ray" baseball cap to all of our softball games. The fact that they would produce promotional sporting goods for a movie about Ray Charles is equal parts confusing and INCREDIBLE. I wear a promotional "Punisher" movie shirt, because I put 'em in the ground. Seriously, I'm lucky to keep a ball in the air past the infield…
They just got a front page story on CHUD, reminding all your readers of the DVD availability of Survival of the Dead, just by sending you a stupid novelty hat…so it seems the money was well spent after all.
I dont know Nick. Sometimes marketing is more important than the movie itself. Get enough people talking, and enough excitement and the movie is a success… Then you get a bigger budget for the next one.. And then you get blair witch 2…. Fuck ok maybe you're right…
Our general manager keeps all the promotional stuff we get in his locked office. Doesn't take it home. Doesn't give it to his friends, and certainly not to his employees. Just sits. In his office. Collecting dust.
