Who the fuck are you to question Carpenter? The guy is without question a master of horror. If he is not then who is fucko? How many fucking iconic gold standard horror films does a director have to do to earn the Master title from you Steve? You realize that if this fucking guy directed only The Thing and Halloween he would be considered a horror master for the rest of his life right?

Darkchylde was just the T&A flavor of the month when it came out, just like pretty much any other T&A book that came out at the time that had a Chaos or Image logo on it. Also, pretty much EVERYTHING outsold Supes and Spidey through the mid-90's. DC failed to capitalize on the success of the Death and Return by just going back to the same old stuff that wasn't selling that necessitated the Death part to begin with, while Spidey was stuck in the middle of the years-long Clone saga *shudder*. I'm sure Randy Green probably has the sales chart from October 1995 or whenever still framed in his house somewhere.

@Chudfan: He wasn't questioning Carpenter's masterful work on The Thing or Halloween. He was pointing out that Carpenter's best work was in the 70's and early 80's, and that maybe his most recent efforts aren't quite up to Master status.

Dude, its perfectly okay to question Carpenter seeing as how he hasn't made a truly good flick since "They Live." Heck, he even gave up for a few years only to return with the very tepid "The Ward." Yeah, he delivered some absolute classics, a master no doubt, but he's a master who seems to have lost his touch.

Yep, it's perfectly acceptable to question the skillset of anyone responsible for Ghosts of Mars. He made some classics, but hasn't made anything even passable in quite some time. There's always hope though I sincerely doubt his big return to creative relevance is going to be anything titled 'DarkChylde'.

Carpenter sucks, despite having made masterpieces, because he hasn't done anything good lately. Also, Hitchcock is a terrible director because he hasn't made ANYTHING in YEARS.

Darkchylde would be an awesome name for a mid-80s metal band. It's a shitty name for a movie though, especially one that's basically Witchblade With Monsters (and Witchblade was basically The Guyver With Tits). True masters know when to retire and let their legacy speak for itself.

Carpenters bad films outweigh the good, Same as Wes Craven and George Romero. All three have made some amazing movies in their time. They were great and now the "Master of Horror" title has been passed on to others. Also look at that image above, looks like a low budget made for TV shitfest.

I hope it's good and all, but that WETA test footage is risible.

Personally, I can't wait for the sequel where Darkchylde teams up with Night Man.

In the Mouth of Madness was a fantastic film. Vampires was better than most of the crap the interweb nerds try to cram down our throats. Ghosts of Mars did stink, but that was his last theatrical flick, almost a decade ago. His Masters of Horror stuff was better than a lot of the others that saw the light of day. I may be the minority here, but I dug the hell out of some of his later films, like Vampires and In the Mouth of Madness. That said, I am quite looking forward to this, and if the poster is any indication, it should be a pretty wild and fun time.

I'm as big a fan of Carpenter's early work as their could be but who's producing this? Fail Films, Inc.? Carpenter hasn't done anything good in 20 years, although Ghosts of Mars is an extremely guilty pleasure. I've never read this comic either but a snap judgement based on the synopsis and cover says geekery way past its expiration date.

Re: #9: Hitchcock's later films did suck. Everything after the Bird's (some argue the Birds included) got progressively worse into his films of the 70's. By the time Frenzy came out he was adding purposefully-shocking scenes to garner attention for middling movies that traded on the hallmarks of his technique from earlier in his career.

Hitchcock's later films did NOT "suck". FRENZY, FAMILY PLOT, TOPAZ etc are not up to par with PSYCHO, NORTH BY NORTHWEST, VERTIGO or REAR WINDOW, but they could still eat lesser directors for breakfast and shit these digested lesser directors into the mouths of other lesser directors. Same principle with John Carpenter, there is no way in hell his bad films outweigh his good ones. The man was on fire for about two decades and defined an entire genre with HALLOWEEN. MEMOIRS OF AN INVISIBLE MAN and GHOSTS OF MARS are his only total theatrical misfires in my opinion, IN THE MOUTH OF MADNESS is good, VAMPIRES has its moments, and PRINCE OF DARKNESS is underrated. Masters of Horror barely counts, they were made for tiny budgets and had tight shooting schedules. They were produced like single episodes of a TV show, not like feature films. And even with that taken into account his CIGARETTE BURNS was the best episode the series produced. I hear his new one sucks but Carpenter is a living legend and if he's making crap these days it's probably because the studios and various other suits treat him like a bum and don't give him the freedom or the resources he deserves.
