The fact that casting for the new Superman reboot has begun is a good thing for young, unknown actors in the 28-32 age range.
It’s a bad thing for Brandon Routh, though.
And that’s a shame – I thought Routh was a real highlight in Bryan Singer’s Superman Returns. Sure he was playing Christopher Reeve, but the film itself was a homage to the Reeve/Richard Donner movies, so he did exactly what was asked of him and was not the reason the film was somewhat of a letdowon.
So the search is on for a new actor to don the red cape, and producer Christopher Nolan and director Zack Snyder are looking at someone unknown (read: cheap) who can quickly jump into action. While they plan on looking at hundreds of actors, the studio has already planned for the production to start shooting around June, mainly due to a rights issue which specifies they must begin production by a certain date. Hopefully this rush at the beginning won’t reflect negatively on the finished movie, and now that casting season on Superman Whatever-The-Name has started, brace yourself for the onslaught of rumors as to who’ll play Kent/Superman.

They're fucking insane to not use the perfect man for the job, Brandon Routh. He embodies the character both on and off the screen.

It's high time they made a movie based on the MODERN Superman. The one that's been in the comics and TV shows since 1986, y'know? The one who is really Clark Kent, a normal guy with serious insecurities, on the inside, but who wears the public "mask" of the perfecto-Superman? Not the stupid old '30s Superman we got in the past FIVE FRICKIN' MOVIES who pretends to be a super-dorky Clark Kent and is actually Practically Perfect In Every Way. God, please, let them use the Superman of the past 25 years. Sooooo overdue.
So…who does Snider think he's going to see that wasn't among the massive casting call that Singer went through?! That casting call wasn't that long ago. We found our perfect Superman in Routh. It's ego to think he can find someone among them who would be better than Routh. DC Fontana? Jared Padlecki? Henry Caviill? All those and more will be trotted out…again. Brandon Routh deserves better. Curses to Zack Snyder.
Keeping Routh around would imply that this was some kind of sequel to Superman Returns. But it isn't. So obviously there's no point in confusing people with that.
The fans love Routh as Superman. There is no reason Routh can't continue on as Supes in a different continuity, ala Connery playing James Bond in Never Say Never Again. It's a dumb move to throw out the only thing they've got working for them.

It is a shame they're not going with Brandon Routh for this one. That means this really is a reboot. Hopefully they'll find a better actress to play Lois because Kate Bosworth, who to be fair did her best, was very miscast.
I've come to the opinion now that he's grown up a little bit Jake Gylenhall would make a good Clark Kent, and is component enough with the action to do superman. He just has that boy scout look, but he's established and confident enough to do his own thing with the character. I know kind of a bland choice, but Kent and Superman are both bland characters. This Brandon Routh fanboy love is weird. He might not of ruined Supermanreturns, but he didn't help it either.
Someone should start an online petition to bring back Routh. I really liked him in the role and think he has earned the right to come back.
Why does everybody got such a boner for Roth? He did good job but it's not like he's the only person who could ever play Superman again.

Why not get the guy who played Superman in those fan films like 'World's Finest'? He looked great as Supes and Kent, and looked a lot like an Alex Ross character..that's what I want him to look like.

The thing I don't get… ok, I loved Routh as Supes.. thought he was a great combination of the Boy-Scout/Tragic Hero. And I think if he leaned a little less on the Reeves icon and grew into his own a bit more he'd be fine in Zack's new flick. He'd have to go through the 300 work out regime and come out looking like a greek god, which I'm sure he'd be more than willing to do. But I do understand the hesitancy on casting him.
BUT why is it that Aronofsky can come in to "save" the Wolverine franchise.. say "my film will have nothing to do with the others. It's a one-off", but no one minds them keeping Jackman in the role. I get that he defined the wolverine role, HE IS WOLVERINE. Unlike Routh's one shot at Superman… but still. If Aronofsky's film is a stand alone picture, (in the same way that Zack's will be for Superman) wouldn't it make sense to recast?!? Just needed to rant a bit. Thanks!
I just don't think anyone cares about SUPERMAN anymore now that Revve's is gone and is clearly evident with the fact that it took 6 months for the movie to barely limp to 200 Mllion domestically.. In the day and age with more complex superheroes MARVEL has put out, SUPERMAN almost seems irrelevant..
@SirFuxALot (#28): what you said may be true but if it can't be faster than a speeding bullet and able to leap a tall building in a single bound, well…don't call us, we'll call you. …Plus Bryan Singer isn't involved, so good luck with that. On a side note, I thought Brandon Routh was the ONLY thing worthy in "Superman Returns". He might suck ass in everything else he's done, but he does deserve another shot at Supes.
