Yep. That’s The Ward. The latest from the old chain smoker himself. So you watched it. So did I.
If someone had asked you to watch it blind without all the hype would you have said it was a John Carpenter movie? I doubt it. A lot has to do with the editing style. Stay Alive. Pulse. The Forgotten. Every other movie starring a teen in peril in the past fifteen years.
This is John Carpenter? The guy hasn’t done anything theatrically since the atrocity that is Ghost of Mars. The Ward (featuring Jared Harris and a bunch of dames who look pretty identical) hasn’t gotten its US release yet, but it will. It will because it looks generic and boring and because the man’s body of work has earned him that right.
But this one. I don’t think it’ll be the big comeback we’ve been waiting for.

Hey. I liked Ghosts of Mars. But yeah, this felt fairly uninspired. Tip: Never end your trailer with the line “That wasn’t so bad, was it?”
A friend of mine co-wrote the script, so I hope it does well for them. Can’t say I have a lot of faith in Carpenter, anymore, but I’m glad they’ve gotten to fix their name to his.
I dunno, it’s a trailer. You can cut a trailer to be completely different to the actual product. Hopefully this has been cut to look like this, but is actually a different beast. There are certainly some ‘In the Mouth of Madness’ beats visible in this. one. Here’s hoping

I should hate Ghosts of Mars, but I found it to be oddly entertaining. He’s made quite a few “bad” movies, but most of them are worth watching. Would I go see this in a theater? Not sure, but I will definitely rent it… Doesn’t look that terrible.
In a perfect world this film would be mean, brutal and relentless. John Carpenter would do us all a favor if he made a film full of anger, spite and viscousness directed at doubting fans. It’s too late in the game to be having fun and coasting on past successes.
I wish I could simply watch this stream on Netflix tonight. Now. YESTERDAY. However, I am keeping my expectations measures. I wish the Carpenter project with Nic Cage had gotten off the ground. Maybe that would have pushed him a bit harder. Maybe that would haev excited him a little more.

As excited as I want to be for a new John Carpenter film, this trailer just looks really generic. There’s nothing about it that distinguishes it from the dozens of other PG-13 horror movies that have come out over the past 10 years.
Amber Heard looks pretty amazing in this, so that’s at least something (right?)
Hopefully the film will have a whole different kind of pace than the trailer — seeing as how it’s Carpenter I don’t know why it would. I’m crossing my fingers, hoping this turns out to be another Survival of the Dead. Crosing them really really tight.
