After a long day of keeping us dangling until half of us were ready to leave our desks, Fox premiered the first trailer for X-Men: First Class on Facebook. It’s an appropriate place to debut so much youthful angst and young lust.
And First Class definitely brings the anguish. I’m glad to see the X-Men taken seriously, but this seems a little overwrought, especially when you’re slyly winking towards Basic Instinct. (You’ll see it.)
However, the 1960s Silver Age aesthetic is spectacular. It’s got that ’60s action flavor, and the costumes and interiors are lush and retro. The film’s Soviet threat struck me as underwhelming, but upon further thought, small and historical would be a great way to tell the origin of the X-Men. I assume the threat becomes two-fold once the mutants “come out.”
It’s clear, however, that the film belongs to McAvoy and Fassbender and their increasingly frosty battle of wills. Forget the threat, forget the colorful cast, forget the CGI — this movie belongs to them. That might actually work against it if the story is supposed to be something bigger, funkier, and flashier than their differing ideologies.

looks…….. good? I’m on board
magneto and the russian submarine. nice touch.
It’s hard to imagine this being worse than Wolverine’s movie. I’m on board. Tentatively.
I will definitely be there!
Looks damn good to me.
Elisabeth Rappe, I am…X-Tremely X-Cited, for this new…X-Men X-Travaganza! Young Magneto as portrayed by Michael Fassbender is so…Kick-Ass, that no, Wolverine is needed, This time. Erik is so, Awe-Inspiringly Dangerous, to his enemies that he caused Charles’ hair to, X-IT, stage left. I cannot wait for the fights between, The X-Men and The Hellfire Club! Also, the Blackbird is…Awesome, and the suits, worn by our heroes are…X-Traodinary!
WTF?
Jesus dude, I’m not the sharpest tool on the Cable Guy’s belt but even I spotted it. Interrogation…interrogator pov from behind glass…interogee a woman dressed in white with her legs crossed?
“It’s hard to imagine this being worse than Wolverine’s movie.” I think Fox has their tagline.
If magneto has telekinetic powers why doesn’t he just use his mind to control his legs 😀
*Cough* Professor X***
I guess when stack it up against X3 and Wolverine it doesn’t look to bad but I’m not holding my breathe. The trailer probably came out so late today because they were still filming part of it this morning.
Is this connected to the first three X movies in a vague, sometimes literal sometimes conceptual way like Singer’s Superman flick was to it’s earlier predecessors? Or was the opening shit just helping the casual viewer connect this all new storyline with the characters from the early 2000s? I’m really asking here.
So Pixie’s a prostitute? Greg Land must be loving this.
We’ll see, I guess. I have faith in Matty Vaughn, though; Layer Cake is one of my all-time favorites, and the rest of his stuff is at worst only entertaining. So I don’t think that a good mutant movie is beyond him.
Already done in X-3. IMO in such short article mentioning that minutiae seemed odd.
Sorry to poop on this party but that was HORRIBLE. It looked like X Men Lite, no Wolvie, Jean or Cyke just action scenes we’ve seen a zillion times before in these films. I hoped they’d do something – ANYTHING – to give it some individual chatacter and distinguish itself from what came before, but it has Singer’s fingerprints all over it. Really shitty, I’m dreading this film.
I still say meh. I’m looking forward to Green Lantern more than this, and I was a WAY bigger X fan than GL growing up.
Ha! Didn’t catch that until just now. It’d be an interesting nod to the comics if this might be the incident that starts sending Erik and Charles down separate paths. Doubly nice easter egg if it’s named the Leningrad.
All in all, I’m favorably impressed. Not blown away, but interested. The collection of talent alone might’ve gotten me in the door, but everything else is just icing.
Is there going to be a threesome in this?
Your Face, i do want to see, Green Lantern, but to me, it is the…4th most, Super, Hero film of 2011. THOR, Captain America, and X-Men First Class, will…Easilly be 1-3 on my list for the year.
McGreedy Rises, I…Love the trailer, and First Class, will definitely be looking like the most…X-Ceptional film about Marvel’s Merry Mutant Marching Society. That is till…The Wolverine, claws his way to the top of the box office charts.
Maybe, Marvel should launch…The New Mutants as a tv series, to eventually replace some of the X-Men actors, in later films.
I think it looks loads better than I expected it to. Considering X3 and Wolverine, and Fox in general.
Oh, and 0:44, is that Eric with a gun? “You Homosapiens and your guns”…..
