I see no reason to actually write another post, so I’ll just republish this one. The Hollywood Reporter has reported Kevin Costner has officially signed to play Jonathan “Pa” Kent in Zack Snyder’s Superman. Props to Latino Review for sniffing out this scoop so early!

I’m a few hours late on this one, so apologies all around, CHUD readers.
Rumors swirled today from Deadline that Kevin Costner was in talks to join Zack Snyder’s Superman. The Internet had a lot of fun fancasting if Twitter is any reflection. Those are always good times on a slow news day.
But Latino Review has already solved the mystery as to who (if he signs) Costner is playing: Jonathan “Pa” Kent.
Costner certainly has that aw shucks Midwestern charm that screams Superman / Smallville / Kent family. It’s good casting, and certainly distances the role from Glenn Ford’s heartbreaking portrayal, and Richard Donner’s film. A younger actor also keeps Jonathan Kent as a living, continuous force in Superman’s life like he has been (albeit off and on — currently off) in the comics.
It’s definitely unsettling to be in a timeframe where Costner is old enough to play Superman’s dad, rather than actually be a Man of Steel contender himself. The more Mom and Dad casting stories I write, the harder the passage of time hits.

There’s something very wholesome and farmboyish about Costner, so yeah I would dig him as Pa Kent. God knows he could use a good role after a string of turnips. He hasn’t been in anything worth a shit since Dances With Wolves (although Waterworld is a guilty pleasure of mine. I fess up).
Apparently McGreedy hasn’t seen Open Range.
i really hope Costner breaks with convention here and doesn’t wear pants that showcase his massive junk at the centre of every shot. I was watching his latest ”the new daughter” a couple of months ago, a good film by all accounts, but i noticed this was a feature, and ever since then iv noticed it in every film he is in. I was especially sorry for the actor who played his young boy in the movie. In many scenes he was forced to act face to face with the thing. I also believe that they need to sort this problem out quickly because nobody would believe that Clark is Costners real son if the stats don’t match up, know what i’m saying?
It’s clunky, but I was hurrying. Is there really nothing else CHUD readers can spend their lives on than marking up their laptop screens with red pen? The news is the story here, not a poor choice of words on my part, and petty remarks make you neither smart, nor original, but boring.
Screw Superman! Now I want two hours of Jonathan Kent: The Movie.
It being clunky is not what he was pointing out. At all. He was trying to help bring a mistake to your attention. He was doing you a favor.
Other than it being clunky, I didn’t see a mistake. If it’s truly a favor, why not be as specific as possible? It’s not a favor if it comes off snarky instead of informative. Often, these “favors” feel more like a bid for attention than any help — why, for example, do I never get a PM or an email instead of a public string of comments? I’d prefer the email.
Again, the NEWS STORY is what is important here. Humans write these things. Mistakes happen. Mistakes happen even in print. Do I like that I make them? No, but I can live with myself, because it’s simply one item in one day. I often go back and edit. Sometimes I’m fast enough. Sometimes I’m not. It’s all in a day’s work.
I see typos on a lot of online sites, from Salon to Gawker, but the movie sites attract far more journeyman editors than they do. I’ve never understood quite why that is.
It reads like it should say “timeframe where Coster is old enough to play Superman’s dad, rather than actually be a Man of Steel contender himself.”
Not a big deal. Chud writers and readers need to live in harmony.
And I love you all. Really. It’s why I race back home to write this stuff and why I’d rather talk about it than my personal stupidity.

I love Costner but really, this casting is just plain weird.
This is awesome. Costner was great in “The Company men”, by the way. Great news!
I’ve always liked Costner from Fandango onwards. Heck I’ve even been known to speak up for The Postman. I like the fact he’s in this Superman movie – but hope it doesn’t take me out of it too much. I also like the fact that he has the reverse initials of Clark Kent – does that count for anything? Does that MEAN anything? Maybe he’ll be playing Bizarro!
Hope there are a lot of farm scenes now. How about Diane Lane and Kevin Costner re-enact a scene from UNfaithful. You know which one.
Oh yeah, I know which scene you mean Navidson. Watching Diane Lane getting boned from behind is better than having sex yourself!
