On any given day, it takes a lot for the movie blogosphere to sit up and take notice. But on a day where we’ve had Apes and The Hobbit hit the net, it has to be something really special. Or demented. I’m not sure what category Case De Mi Padre falls into.
GordonandtheWhale found the trailer for Padre, inexplicably buried on YouTube. Why wouldn’t a Will Farrell trailer hit with more fanfare? Well, perhaps because this one is entirely in Spanish, and filmed like a telenovela filtered through a fever dream. There’s not even a release date for it, but IMDB offers an official synopsis: Armando Alvarez (Will Ferrell) has lived and worked on his father’s ranch in Mexico his entire life. As the ranch encounters financial difficulties, Armando’s younger brother Raul (Diego Luna), shows up with his new fiancé, Sonia (Genesis Rodriguez). It seems that Raul’s success as an international businessman means the ranch’s troubles are over as he pledges to settle all debts his father has incurred. But when Armando falls for Sonia, and Raul’s business dealings turn out to be less than legit, all hell breaks loose as they find themselves in a war with Mexico’s most feared drug lord, the mighty Onza (Gael Garcia Bernal)
I’m not sure what to make of it. On one level, it’s hilarious. But it feels like a concept that belongs purely to a fake trailer or Funny or Die short. There’s no way this can be good for two hours…can it?

That’s true Elisabeth, on one level it is hilarious. But as a man of firey Latin passions I’m here to tell you it’s also hilarious on ten thousand levels!!!
Ok, I’m not Latin, I’m half Danish, half Dutch all kiwi. But my nickname is Latin! Doesn’t that count for anything?!?
Look, maybe it can’t hold its mustard for two hours, but dammit if I don’t want it to on every level. I mean, god God, it looks to be referencing Alfredo Garcia and Revenge among other things. It would be hard for me not to love this movie on trailer alone.
With those two mexicans you yanks might have seen in Y Tu Mama Tambien, this could be a lot more than just a crazy trailer. Ferrell is a bit too much for me but if they rein him in a bit and let those two chingados go wild, this could be awesome.
