It is the age of the blonde beefcake. As Chris Hemsworth and Taylor Kitsch catch ascending stars, Charlie Hunnam says “Why not me? Anyone got a monster or alien movie? The A-Team 2? Something?”
His prayers have been answered.
According to Deadline, Hunnam has signed onto star in Guillermo Del Toro’s Pacific Rim. If you remember, Rim is Del Toro’s mistaken-for-Godzilla spec. Scripted by Travis Beacham, it centers on “giant malevolent creatures threaten to destroy the earth, city by city. To combat its annihilation, the planet must band together and use highly advanced weapons technology to eradicate the growing threat.” It’s a movie we’ve seen a million times before, and perhaps not what we wanted to see Del Toro tackle, but it has possibilities. At the very least, it promises some original monster design.
Hunnam does seem like one of those Chris Evans types, destined to break out if only he has the right project. I’m lame and I don’t watch Sons of Anarchy, but I did think he was charming in Nicholas Nickleby. SOA fans will have to sound off as to whether he’s a capable action lead.

He’s great. Stopped watching SOA after the first season, but it was always solid, performance-wise. That Chris Evans comparison is fairly spot-on.
He’ll always be Lloyd from ‘Undeclared’ to me. It was a shock to see him be a credible tough guy in SoA.
Given that he was involved in a bit of rimming in the first season of Queer as Folk that’s a definite missed title opportunity. Hey ho, though.
He’s a great actor! I hope this leads to a lot more roles! SOA is probably my favourite show, and I’ve never ridden a bike. (Well, I was on my brother’s when I was about 2, but I’m not sure that counts.)
Kudos to Hunnam! Any guy that can go toe to toe with Perlman every week and carry a killer series like SoA should be up to his waist in film roles by now. The only ones I’ve seen him in are Children of Men and Cold Mountain, both cases having barely enough time to acknowledge he was on screen.
He also has the coolest walk since Kevin Bacon. There, I said it.
Congrats to the guy. Lets hope this makes enough money to loosen studio purse strings to projects with more complex ideas for Del Toro. I want his movies to be thought provoking, not just interesting looking.
I’ve found him to be a pretty weak and unlikable lead on SONS OF ANARCHY. Having Del Torro off MOUNTAINS and instead working on something with *this* guy is definitiely kind of spirit crushing, at least at this early hour on a Tuesday morning
