Oh, Highlander. You’ve given us so much. Christopher Lambert beheading immortal Scotsmen for our enjoyment,a fun and cheesy tv series, that awesome Queen song, all those predictable Quickening jokes whenever a sequel to a film is announced.
Now, a new Highlander is coming. RCR Media Group will co-finance Summit Entertainment’s attempt to reboot the series.
Justin Lin (Fast Five) will direct the film from a script from Art Marcum and Matt Holloway (Iron Man, Punisher: War Zone). Neal H. Mortiz (Fast Five, Green Hornet, TORQUE) will produce alongside Peter Davis of the Highlander series.
There’s no star just yet but the story is the same down to the name of the lead-
In Highlander, after centuries of dueling to survive against others like him, Connor MacLeod, an immortal Scottish swordsman must confront the last of his kind, a murderously brutal barbarian, who lusts for the Prize.
The big gimmick, if y0u’re unaware, is that these immortal men can only be killed by one of their own, and only by beheading. And there can only be one.
This seems a good time to fire up the original as I haven’t seen it in years. The tv series is on Netflix Instant, also.

Well technically, anyone can kill an immortal, as long as they cut off their heads. If no other immortal is around then the power is lost. I’m going by the tv show of course so that’s kind of different from the film continuity.

Just got the press release about RCR Media Group financing this morning.
Yeah, this is a perennial remakequel target. The inclusion of Hot-Thing-Of-Moment Justin Lin doesn’t re-enforce that it’s anymore than a toe being dipped in the studio investment water to gauge the current temperature/heat. Next week it’ll be the Bladerunner whateverquel announcement from whomever’s still keeping that alive.
Daft thing is it’s been so long now since the original they could do a legitimate sequel with a whole new batch of immortals having been born and starting to figure out what’s going on – rather than just doing a tedious retread of the same ground.
Just hope they come up with a better “Prize” then being able to have babies.

I think you’re right. Even the “epic” Highlander 2 basically showed that Sean Connery was killed by a giant fan lowering down (so a machine did him in). So the movies even support this. That said, I’ve always thought the tagline “There can only be one.” is pretty dumb. Per the first Highlander movie, these highlanders have been around for centuries. So for centuries there were more than one. The “one” angle was simply the thought that if just one highlander remained, he would gain super-awesome powers. But it’s not like there can only be one – they aren’t under some kind of slow-killing disease if there are more than one in existence at any given time. Then that would make sense for the desire (and the tagline) to kill the others off to stay alive. 🙂
No…the prize was being able to read the thoughts of anyone on the planet. The whole “babies” thing was because Connor also became mortal after he killed Kurgan.
Didn’t Highlander 2 go so far off the reservation because the first one was so self-contained (Connor was the last immortal standing). This remake sounds like another one and done, rather than the first of a new franchise.
Good grief. Another 80s reboot/remake? Just leave it alone already and come up with some new ideas.

Actually, I’m pretty sure the TV series made it clear that if an immortal is killed by a mortal or in an accident, the power is transferred to the closest immortal in proximity.
Also, while Justin Lin is definitely THE hot director right now, he has been attached to this project for almost two years…………so you can’t really say that Summit is jumping on the Fast Five bandwagon. Lin was attached to the project right after Summit hired screenwriters for it years ago and has been sheparding it since then. Personally, I’ll be glad if it turns out well. If it doesn’t, no biggie. It’s not like it could possibly be anywhere near as atrocious as Highlander: The Source………….which is probably hands down the worst sequel I have ever seen in my entire life.
