About halfway through the preview for indie darling Zooey Deschanel’s The New Girl I said to myself, “What the fuck is this?” Originally I had thought I was watching a trailer for a new movie, and it was very quickly shaping up to be the most atrocious looking piece of puked-up quirky rom-com horseshit I’d seen in a long time. It just didn’t seem to have a plot. But then I started getting suspicious, because it really didn’t seem to have a plot. The story of a panderingly awkward hot tomboy (Deschanel) who moves in with three broey bros seemed like a set-up for a movie, but then there was no new romantic subplot for our heroine, just unending quirky awkwardness. Then the nightmare preview finally ended and the FOX TV logo came up and things started making a bit more sense to me.
The New Girl is an upcoming Fox one-camera comedy created by No Strings Attached‘s screenwriter, Elizabeth Meriwether, with a pilot directed by Jake Kasdan. That makes what I just sat through more contextually acceptable. Though, I don’t know, this still seems insufferable. I can’t imagine I’ll ever see No Strings Attached, so its unfair for me to speak negatively of it, but I like Jake Kasdan quite a bit. But still… Jesus. This preview was so relentlessly quirky it made me want to punch my computer, then all my neighbors, then myself. Then my computer again. Yet, I have to admit, I feel a strange urge to check out the pilot just because I feel like I need to understand what the flow of the show will actually be. This just doesn’t feel like a TV show. Color me masochistically fascinated.
Be warned.

When did “Quirky” become synonymous with “Lame”? This didn’t look horrible, but when I think of quirk I think of Miranda July stuff, not Zooey trying to outcute Elmo. I thought this looked like fluffy, feel good entertainment without the randomness of quirk.
Hey, Zooey Deschanel playing the Manic Pixie Dream Girl, who’da thunk, right?
I wouldn’t care about this show existing if they didn’t just get done cancelling Lie to Me, The Chicago Code, and Human Target.
But since they did, fuck you, Fox.
So it’s Three Men and a Baby, but the baby is a girl who is as bad as a baby because she’s such a girl.
Bingo. How do we get this female to stop crying???
First season summary: The guys help her to move on while she helps them hook up. There’s a will-they-or-won’t-they between Zooey and one of the roomates, but in the season finale, one of the other two is “there for her” and she sleeps with him instead. OMG!
I think I just lost some brain cells. Kill it with fire!
Fucking dudes. Always so oblivious and this looks fine. Go play a CoD title and teabag a guy in order to show how manly you are. Oh wait, go play portal 2, and try to act as if it’s not sudoku for gaming nerds.
I thought the opening – with her insightfully deconstructing the horror genre – was witty and original. Also, I sent this post from 1994.
Somebody’s having their peeeeer-y-ODD!!
Did “Happy Endings” already get canceled? Because that appeared to be Damon Wayans, Jr, co-star of “Happy Endings.”
I love Zooey Deschanel (and her sister), but I actually have no desire to see this. Other than for Zooey.
god she is gorgeous
I agree that she’s beautiful. Also, I enjoy her music and have liked her in a few movies and TV appearances. But that trailer made me not only never want to see this show, but also never see her in anything ever again. She has never been that annoying. Shit like this is why I barely ever watch new TV shows.
