After apologizing again and again for the first Green Lantern trailer, Warner Bros has stepped up their promotional game.
A third trailer hit the Internet tonight, offering a little more footage, and a big dose of mythology. In fact, there’s more Lantern history than shots of Ryan Reynolds.
I think we’ve said it with just about every trailer Warner Bros put out, but this is really is the teaser the studio should have released first. It’s a teaser, not a trailer, and it’s the perfect newbie introduction to the wild and weird mythology of the Lantern Corps. Coming on the heels of Trailer #2 and the extended sneak peek on Apple, it feels a bit redundant. In fact, the more skeptical might say something like “Now they’re cutting out Reynolds because he’s weak!” (I’m not saying that. I think they’re just taking advantage of a post-Thor marketplace and showing off their expansive universe. )
It remains to be seen if the backwards marketing hurts Lantern. I don’t think it will. Trailer #2 played to great enthusiasm at my screening of Thor. The little kid in front of me — who had never, until that moment, heard of Green Lantern — was beside himself with excitement. And that’s exactly who you have to hook. (He did insist very loudly his mother couldn’t come. Kid, moms like superhero movies too. Don’t be that guy.)

Elisabeth Rappe, OA WOW! The newest Green Lantern Trailer is…Awe-Inspiring!
I’ve been nothing but excited about this movie since day 1!
My interest in this movie (which had already been stoked by the last trailer) just went up 100%. This looks immense. Hope it lives up to it. This movie should do bucks in NZ anyway because Taika and Tem are in it but it genuinely looks epic (in the true sense of the word).
Well, i think its sad that these powerful and amazing Comicbook Films come too close to each other!
Just imagine this movie or “Thor” or “Kick Ass” or even the underrated “Losers” would have been released 15 years ago.
As a “standalone” adventure….they all would have been classics.
But nowadays every week starts a Comicbook movie that wants to bigger, better and greater…
I start getting used to it! Its a normal thing…sadly…
soryy for ma bad english:-)
Ryan Reynolds will at some point in the movie take off his shirt. So yeah, the kid’s mom will be there.
Purely anecdotal of course, but these trailers really do seem to be washing away the stink of that original trailer. I guess the good news is that the original trailer was so unremarkable to non-comic fans that it was easily forgotten in lieu of this new stuff, which looks pretty awesome.
The only thing that’s going to kill the domestic take on Green Lantern is that unlike Thor, it’s got massive competition coming one week later (Cars 2) and then the likely juggernaut of the summer coming a week and a half later (now that they’ve moved up their release date to Wednesday) in the form of Transformers 3. So it’ll be pushed off the premium screens even faster than Thor was.
Looks pretty cool, the film, but its kind of scary the way the mask emphasises just how close together Reynolds eyes are…
